Sloppy and awkward works in that context. Mantle feels like it's being made as you listen to it. A story told in real time, and the next telling might be different. It sounds like a living thing. This also has some of that, which is lost for me on Ashes.

This one has always felt like a nice culmination of the band's work up until this point, but I don't like it as much as Mantle. The Mantle is a timeless classic for me

I don't think this bad ever released a band album, to me they're a top 3 overall as far as metal acts go.
So I wouldn't call this far beyond the rest of the stuff they've done, but it's special for sure
