right on, grinning mouths was my favorite for a while, I really love weight too

Ah okay what is the term for that section of so did we then? The one that rules but that also repeats throughout the track
|
| |
Ig So Did We spends a lot of its time churning over two motifs, but the one that rules (the higher register phrase that emerges out of the other and then subsides again) builds tension and trails off on an unresolved cadence (which why the climax sounds so good when it finally crashes in after it), so I'd never felt it plays a chorus role hmm
Reason that track has aged so well for me is that it's cyclical without being entirely linear (although it builds to the mother of all payoffs obvs) - band are constantly modulating their dynamics and bringing different tones in and out of the background, so you never seem to hear it the same way twice. Each iteration builds detail rather than reinforcing repetition, although it also certainly does that too HMMM

Backlit imo. I'm with that one guy that "carry" is the goat tho

its hard for anything to complete with so did we due to the seamless flow of the melodic sections and the sheer intensity of the crescendo. the only things that come close for me are the sound by swans and blue day for croatoa by rosetta

One of the best albums ever yet Oceanic is somehow even better

It wishes.
Also Blue Day is so stylistically different it's interesting to see it mentioned alongside those.

Blue Day For Croatoa is amazing.
Oceanic is possibly slightly better than this.

ngl I could see myself re-5ing this someday, but the way Backlit comes in in the #2 slot is maybe the main obstacle to that end. rest of it flows perfectly and Altered State has grown from a long ol shrug to a firm keeper

Yes I totally agree Johnny, backlit ruins the momentum of the album

Blue day for croatoa is stylistically different, so is the sound. I’m just referring to the crescendos. Those three songs have the best walls of sound I’ve heard

Altered State paves the way for one of the best closers ever. I'm okay with Backlit, it's also my least enjoyed song of the album but I still love it

I think you mean Altered Course.
Backlit is one of the weakest here but it still brilliant. Sticks out as a more 'positive' sounding track in comparison to what else is on offer here.

yeah I was gonna say there's something "accessible" about backlit. its my fav tho, just feels great to listen to

So Did We, Wills Disolve, Grinning Mouths… how to pick just one?
Syndic Calls doesn’t get as much love from what I can gather but man has that one grown on me in recent times too. I legitimately think every song here except Altered Course has been a contender for the top spot (or at least the podium) at one point or another
I love how each cut here feels distinct once you’ve properly sunk teeth into what’s on offer, yet this is also one of the smoothest album experiences I’ve encountered

Yeah Backlit doesn't flow as well as the rest of the album, easily my least favourite
Bookends are the best tracks for me
