"opeth isnt overrated"

No, of course it isn't. It's not like all the Akerfeldt worshippers think he's more of a musical genius than even he himself admits. In no way overrated. No, not like it's one of the biggest names in metal.

Well, no shit Sherlock. But if you have a huge fanbase, the likeliness of this fanbase being filled with people who overrate the artist is exponentially going to be bigger. I don't think I'll have to further explain this.

Also, Opeth fans have proven to have the obnoxious habit of overrating the technicality and skillfulness of Akerfeldt's songwriting, especially regarding his riffs.

Yea it really annoys me when people only consider a band well known if they have like 500 million fans, like fuck.

Also, people have seem to think "overrated" is a discrediting term. It isn't.

lol, sales are completely irrelevant nowadays for a band to be big. It's all about exposure and exposure doesn't lie in sales anymore, we're not in the 80s. This is the age of the internet, the only genre that really counts on record sales is pop which is why 'mainstream pop' or what we understand as pop is mostly either tween boppery or party/club hopping BS.

Also, genres such as metal count way more on concerts. Most of the local scene here is able to survive solely because of concerts and partly merch.

The term overrated is used too loosely on this site anyway.

Yes, except that some people throw terms around like the Spanish tomatoes at certain festivities and some people actually have a line of reasoning to back it up.

Opeth is overrated as hell. but I love them. but they kind of get put up on some imaginary pedestal (and specifically Mikael) as the kings of prog or the kings of metal with supernatural powers or something. happens a lot with Tool too. they are great bands, but attract hyperbole like none other for some reason.

that being said, I like the riffs they write. and the songs...it's not the most interesting or groundbreaking music I've ever heard, but I enjoy it a hell of a lot, and yeah there's not a lot of technicality in the riffing at all usually, but the riffs still usually rule.
