"then effectively ‘banning’ new music"

Nice, I've been doing that since the end of last year. No regrets.

I was gonna do that this year and work through Death, Opeth and Funkadelic. And then I started my homework lists, effectively quashing my attempt lol. Have fun with KC though, they are an incredible band.

Red is their best album, but this is also a classic.

i could see someone thinking that if they prefer either (or both) the second and third eras of KC more than the first.
assuming:
first era - jazz influenced, prog/experimental rock phase ('Court' through 'Red')
second era - progressive new wave / art rock phase ('Discipline' through 'Three of a Perfect Pair')
third era - industrial/electronic influence progressive metal / hard rock phase ('THRAK' through 'The Power to Believe')
i know they had lineup changes even among these eras but i think they had three delineated sounds throughout their career as noted above.

i guess you could even split up the first era into

first era 1 - jazz influenced prog rock ('Court' through 'Islands')
first era 2 - experimental/avant-garde prog rock ('Larks Tongues' through 'Red')

I don't think you can split up their first era. Larks through red is still "Jazz influenced prog rock".

it is, but there’s also a much stronger delineation between Larks and everything before it

Sure it's probably the biggest leap out of all the albums after ITCOTKC, but I think Lizard and Islands are very different to the first two albums as well. Different enough to have their cluster.

I'd stick to just 3 for simplicity.
