I've always felt like the mantle is definitely their most overrated. It's my least favorite outside of the last album

it's the one I loved most since it got me into them, but my love for it is tied more to the memories I associate with listening to it than how I enjoy it now. present day, it's the second hardest for me to get through, but I'll always love it
nowadays, it's Ashes/The White -> Marrow -> Pale Folklore

I really wish I loved Serpent. I've tried so many times to appreciate what they were going for but over the years I've come to accept that it just doesn't work for me

Yeah, it's pretty bland at times
Same with Pillorian

This is their last album with that Agalloch magic.

I grew to really enjoy a handful of tracks on Serpent, but overall it's certainly my least favorite LP

Yeah same. Dark Matter Gods is my fav, and the Musk Ox tracks too. Rest ranges from adequate to boring.

the opener might be the worst track, definitely kills it from the start. Dark Matter Gods is when it starts to pick up and Celestial Effigy has some really strong moments. Plateau of the Ages is a great track but the whole thing is a slog from start to finish

yeah the opener makes the album's momentum start from the bottom of the ocean and have to work up from there
it also feels completely separated from the "real" album which I feel is all the tracks sandwiched between the Musk Ox tracks

The pacing and lack of ideas makes Serpent a slog yea, but the opener and Plateau do have their moments. Celestial Effigy is probably my second favorite after Dark Matter Gods. I still think it's weird they outsourced all the neofolk to another band. Can't help but wonder if this was due to lack of inspiration to write anything other than pretty good but unspectacular atmospheric/melodic post-black metal.

i refuse to subscribe to the opinion that simple chord progressions and simple lyrics make for sub-par music as there are too many examples of the contrary, but w/e, I used to be a musical elitist too so I know where you're coming from

simple chords are fine and the mantle wouldn't be improved by more complex alternatives. issue is that so many of its other songwriting tools sound crude or amateurish that its simplicity gets cast in a dodgy light in general. especially with those dated post-rock dynamics and unimaginative scale-transcription melodies - tbh there are also some great motifs (wooden doors/great cold death), but a large chunk of the instrumentals (odal/hawthorne esp) sound way too facile to hit the brief
i don't usually give a shit when musicians sound like they barely know what they're doing or music is sloppy or basic or whatever, but the 'epic' scope and po-faced delivery on that alb is where the line gets drawn. agalloch were a pretentious band trying to stretch makeshift-sounding composition skills to make profound statements above their grasp, i get a major suspension-of-disbelief interferencething around that atMOsperh, and the chord progressions are a convenient scapegoat for this. they stepped it up though! idk if this or ashes really did away with all the cringeworthy parts of their sound, but they sound so much more in control of it that it's never bothered me if not
nd also "simple" is generous to the point of disingenuous for those lyrics; be real, you'd be embarrassed if you'd written that level of bollocks 20 yrs ago

The only not perfect aspect of The Mantle is some of the singing.
