Does anyone have an inkling if Coroner influenced the TSOP era? I just listened to some tunes of theirs and this was the first thing that came to mind

Also Vektor of course

A lot of tech thrash influence was prevalent as far back as ITP. Watchtower's even more obvious in terms of emulation here.

Yeah, I was about to mention Watchtower. Chuck even had a shirt of them at some point

Awake by Dream Theater was also a significant influence on the progressive direction of Symbolic and TSoP, according to a 1995 interview he did with Guitar World

I don't really hear any Dream Theater on those records but hey, at least they influenced something really great.

@sizeofanocean - To quote Chuck himself from that 1995 interview:

"But you have to be careful not to become too complex. Music has to have a foundation-- something that will stick in your ear. Hopefully, someone can listen to Symbolic and walk away whistling a tune, no matter how weird that may sound. You have to know where that limit is. Like Dream Theater; their music is very complex, but they definitely have hooks, which is crucial to making music listenable-- and it's something that will always be a part of this band."

I wish more of the riff-salad prog metal bands of today could take that same advice

What's an example of riff salad prog metal band today?

Haken's an example that immediately comes to mind, especially Visions. That's why I've always found it difficult to fully connect to their music; I end up forgetting a lot of what I heard just moments later

I always said that Symbolic and Mental Vortex are excellent companion albums.

Chuck's influences are pretty fascniating. I've read that A-Ha was one of his favorite bands, and that Smashing Pumpkins, Lush, and My Bloody Valentine helped inspired Symbolic's sound. He was a big shoegaze fan. Also, Carcass was a huge influence on the proggier stuff.

Interesting insight from both of you, thanks! Chuck was truly a chad. I always got the feeling that he had great pop sensibilties and to put them in display in a extreme genre is quite the feat. Leprosy and Symbolic are super catchy, i really find myself often humming riff passages from those two records

Absolutely. That foundation is probably what made Death so important / great. Artists needs other artists who push boundaries and innovate, sometimes to extremes. Would-be fans need something to latch onto, especially if the genre is unfamiliar.

Death struck an incredible balance between invention, musicianship and an accessibility rarely (if ever) found in the realms of death metal. They ticked all the boxes.
