Many thoughts after my first listen:
1.) Lemon finally clicked with me, it's a cool little tune
2.) Not really getting AOTY hype personally, but it's an extremely well-made revival of Myspace-core. The museum framing of the album is cute, but a tad overwrought. While I know that the zaniness is the point and they reeled it in a bit from Celebrity Therapist, some of the songs don't hit me like they probably intended, mostly in the first half
3.) Hilarious that the band writes a song that ADTR would slice off their left nut to with "Distracted By the Mona Lisa"... that's a fuckin awesome song
4.) Country Song in Reverse rules

It is a mess, but it's the kinda mess that works for me where some of this album doesn't

I wouldn’t go that far, but it does feel more like individual cool parts a bit more than the rest. I do think there is a coherent song under there and think it will fully click with me given more time

not the bjork interpolation on the last song 😭😭😭

And yes, Carson has (had?) a fall out boy super fan podcast and cites panic at the disco as a reason they are a band. Not surprising there are elements of those heavily influencing their math core band

“so I’m in agreement with nash that it definitely is kitschy, I mean they threw a whole kitschen sink of retro curveballs into this, but it’s presented in such a knowing way that it comes across as amusing and playful (rather than an outdated retread)”
I agree here. That’s why I landed on a 3 and not something lower.
“anyone else think country song is an incoherent mess??? feel like i'm on an island here reading this thread lol”
The closer actually pushed me to 3 this. While it is incoherent, it feels coherent by the end of the record lol. I liked the parts. But with any band that bolts multi genre behavior into singular tracks you always can end up with “mashup” vs “fluid songwriting” debates and it always comes back to your opinion. Perhaps that’s the beauty I don’t know

This album has a lot of things I didn't expect, which is exactly what I'd expect from them.

This is like...possibly my favorite album of the decade so far (fighting with Rolo Tomassi, Knocked Loose, Spiritbox and Meshuggah)

I can't say all that yet considering it was released yesterday but it is definitely massive.

Aha I know it was released yesterday, but I literally had this shit on repeat during a 5 hour drive yesterday (and today during my workout) and I'm pretty confident it's not just recency bias
This shit is legit as fuck dude

Yeah, I feel like transitions in mathcore, especially when bands are experimenting with melody, are often a ymmv situation.

the zany (non)transitions are definitely a tricky thing to pull off or you have to be in a certain mood.
I never had a problem with them on, say, BTBAM's Colors but that's a lot of people's biggest complaint about that album.
A good deal of them on this album make feel old, because maybe I'm the out of touch guy in his 30's but I didn't really enjoy a good deal of them. Country Song in Reverse works for me simply because it's kinda the point of the song to just throw everything at the wall with such conviction

People worry about transitions too much. You start sounding like a rule follower.
