also, Petrucci's first 2 riffs in Night Terror before and as LaBrie starts singing are incredible

Favorite part of Night Terror is that beat switch on the second verse. Such a tried and true DT play but it gets me every time.

Kinda dig the album and it's definitely great seeing Portnoy back on the kit. I think I'm starting to understand why a lot of people don't care for James' vocals especially in these later albums cause they are to me sort of grating now.

I agree with you Titan. I think once we both talked already about it. I never understood the problems with LaBrie's vocals. Of course the guy hasn't the same vocal range from the past but it still is, in my book, an amazing singer with an impressive vocal work.

Labrie has always been the least impressive part of the band to me. I tolerate him, and I stay for Petrucci everytime

If I had to replace one member of the band, it's easily Jordan. He can be replaced rather flawlessly, so therefore, even though he isn't the least talented, he'd be the first to go.
I agree that Petrucci is the most important member. The man is a guitar God.

"i will never for the life of me understand liking Dream Theater when one cant stand the lead singer"
Misconception, I used to love him, but now he objectively sucks and sounds like a dying animal.

Studio albums still sound good. His live performance has improved dramatically since he got into better shape. Not many 61 year olds still sound great.

Still spinning this one daily. Didn't think I'd say that about a dream theater album in 2025

With time to really let this sink in, I would say: Awake > Metropolis Pt. 2 > Images And Words > Parasomnia

The initial novelty has worn off of this a bit but I'd say it still comfortably sits juuuuust outside of their top 5-6 at the moment

Night Terror was always great. Shortest 10 minute song ever made

^ Gonna nerd out with some music theory for a sec, but:
What I like about Night Terror is that each chorus is slightly different, and whatever part of the scale they end on will dictate what the next section will be. So for instance, if the last chord is in B, they'll go back into the main riff which is in E. But when the last chord is in E, they'll go into the solo/bridge section which is in A. Nice variation on the classic V-I transition, and it's pretty cool that they still pull those little compositional tricks so far into their career

agreed Koris, i notice they do things like that throughout their discog, little touches like that make the song better
