Best thing to do if you want to play an 8-string is get a budget model and then upgrade the pickups. I have a $300 Schecter 7-string and had some Seymour Duncan pickups installed (Nazgul/Sentient) a few years ago. Barely get around to playing much these days but it was a massive upgrade in how it sounded. The guitar itself has always been solid for the money and was my main guitar when I was recording music.
