This album... is incredibly boring. I just don't get it, man. I actually really enjoy their first two albums. Their British psychedelia/Beatles-inspired era (short lived) is just fun. It's harmony/melody heavy, and yeah, there are some super bland tracks, but the hits are hitting.



This album is more like a middle ground of that style and the more elaborate prog rock leanings that produced masterpieces like Relayer. It's stuck in-between. It doesn't have huge crescendos, cool ominous passages, bizarre rhythmic turns, or many recognizable melodies to latch onto. It's technically impressive, and it sure as hell isn't bad, but it really all blends together and it's lacking so many of Yes's best characteristics. I've Seen All Good People and A Venture are pretty solid tunes, but outside of those... nah.

Yeah, Fragile is a fun album. Seems like it's just this one so far that kind of bores me =/

I actually prefer this one to Fragile tbh. Fragile's longer tracks are amazing, but the interludes really weigh it down for me... I understand that songs like Cans & Brahams and 5 Per Cent were meant to demonstrate the talents of the (then) new members, but they don't necessarily make for an enjoyable listen when removing that context



Then again, I'm the weird guy who has Drama and 90125 in his top 5 Yes albums, so what do I know lol

Fragile took me a few spins and tbf I can totally see someone not liking that album a ton. Mostly for the reasons you stated - shorter interlude-y tracks that do nothing in isolation. One of those albums that's a lot easier to appreciate beginning to end than it is to single out specific tracks (outside of the bookends and a couple others).



Now I'm onto Close to the Edge, which is far better than either this or Fragile.



Have you guys heard their first two albums? There are some legit bangers in there.

Time and a Word is slightly better than the debut imo but both are solid 👌.



Favs from the debut are "I See You" and "Beyond and Before".



Favs from Time and a Word are "Then", "Time and a Word" and "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed".

I agree with Hovse. They're different works, even with cover tracks, the only two albums that happened. But the covers are really, ok. But these are two very different works. I think the real Yes began with "Fragile".

Besides, I think, as a whole, that "The Yes Album" is probably better than "Fragile". At least it’s definitely much more balanced. It doesn’t have those short filler tracks.

Maybe, but I never liked them. Besides, “Fragile” was completed in less than two months, especially because they needed a new album to pay for all the new Wakeman’s equipment. Probably it’s the main reason why the group created individual songs to release the album as soon as possible.
