"Personally, I don't like the idea of creating an alternative 70s timeline in my mind and pretend contemporary music doesn't exist just to favor the classic status of this album. Music should be judged for what it is now and not for what it was in the past."
I agree with this completely

are you suggesting that this wouldn't be amazing if released today?
|

Album Rating: 3.5
No, this is a great album as a whole and some songs will always be excellent (War Pigs, Paranoid,
Electric Funeral) as the years pass. I consider it to be a classic album for its influence, but we all
have to admit that if it had been released today, ver few people would give this a 5.
That does not mean I don't understand the importance of this album. I respect this a lot as a
metalhead and I recognize its brilliance.

fair points, but i think another contributing reason to that theory would be that people are generally quite reluctant to give 5's to albums that have just come out, however good they are. I know I certainly am. Problem is, it's practically impossible to hypothesize a realistic situation where this album was only released today given the influence it had - the face of heavy music might be completely different

an album's contribution to the evolution of music must surely be factored into its ranking. but it doesn't end there. some classic albums seem to age, and some don't...and that's where the subjectivity creeps in

Album Rating: 4.5
i tend to judge my ratings on the actual music, because, at the end of the day, you're not listening to the influence

hence 'factored into' as opposed to 'the primary consideration'
I'm working off the theory that if the album was influential, there must have been something original about it, but I realise that's not always the case
|
| |
Album Rating: 4.5
i guess that's a fair assumption to make in most cases. I mean, most people would be more inclined to like an album if it's got a classic reputation, even if only subconsciously

haha don't get me started on that....people 5'ing or 2'ing things on here after 1.5 listens

"an album's contribution to the evolution of music must surely be factored into its ranking"
That's a fact. Any piece of art must be placed in context.

People will remember this for its impact on their lives, not necessarily its impact on music, but this certainly fits into both categories.
