It was difficult telling what year he was referring to by looking at the artists on Zak’s list

And yeah ‘no memorable songs’ or ‘bland’ is odd for a 3.5, lol… to each their own but that’s a weird af rating system

stuff needs to be very uninspired to borderline grating or offputting to get below 2.5 for me.

3.5 is an overall "fine" album with some highlights... actually, now that you guys are complaining about it I'll actually drop it to a 3

lol.

Yeah a lot of the old guard delivered gold, it’s bloody distressing the lack of new stuff, proper bands and above all not a lot of exciting fresh yank stuff.

End times.

I do think this year has been particularly weak for new music, obviously some good stuff but not as good as standout years from the last decade (2016, 2020)

Shanty is one of their best songs maybe

“shanty” is fantastic yeah, definitely the biggest keeper/the tune that goes in the most interesting direction for them relatively speaking. “kisses” and “skin in the game” are also wonderful, nothing unique but really excellent as far as dream POP songs go. “the slab” is an excellent closer, don’t totally love it but it works, similar feelings about “alife.” The other songs are fine in context but unimpressive. Overall a very good album but not quite as consistent as I’d wish; it’s their only release that feels merely competent.

The final minute of Skin in the game might be the most beautiful ending to any song ever tbh

First shoegaze track is v clearly the opener - think this as a whole leans a little further back into trad gaze than the s/t LP, but both walk their line. Shoegaze/dream pop always a bit of an unhelpful distinction with Slowdive though - their whole premise is y not both more often than not
