Yeah this is great fun.

Azazzel I had to pasta this:

>We've gone from hit songs to "album-albums", borrowed concept-albums from prog, adapted post-rock into linear crescendos, singular unitary works, stretched black and dissonance to nihilistic annihilation and now we've gone off the map completely into the abyss, venturing out the other side of dark universe wormhole.

That's beautiful man. And try to ignore that dude. He needs help and we can't give it to him.

This album is absolute fire, but its not at all what I expected.

The biggest influence seems to be Sound of Perseverance era Death. But there's a lot of stuff in here that is surprising.

A big part of the conceit, especially in the first half, is they pulled a Watershed or Major/Minor and spent a bunch of time playing with major keys and chord substitutions that you wouldn't normally expect on a metal album. When the chord progression on The Blaze starts, and then it builds up with the power chords at the end, my brain expected to hear some type of Color and the Shape era Foo Fighters melody kick in.

There's also the Vektor style thrash influences, the traditional heavy metal influences, the prog, the Greg Howe era fusion influences. Sometimes the sum of the influences come together in ways that seem proximal to non-Sputnik favored styles like Gothenberg-esque melodies, or some almost core-type passages in the vein of The Number 12 Looks Like You or The Red Chord, or even some ideas that feel tangential to BTBAM or djent artists. Luckily there's not too much that makes me think of the latter, just some flavors here or there.

The production is absolutely stellar. The bass shines through really well, and the guitar leads are some of the purest sounding guitar lead tones I've heard in a long time, very reminiscent of 80s shredders.

More than on the previous albums, the technical proficiency and creativity of each of the members really shines through. Guitars, drums, bass are all impeccable and all play off of each other really well. It doesn't feel like an album that was written with one or two elements around and the rest constructed around those, all of the elements really build on each other.

Exegenesis, the Death Knell Ringeth, and the opening pair are just an unbelievable amount of fun from a musician's perspective in a way that I haven't found a lot of modern albums to be post 2010. A lot of the most technically interesting and creative metal in the 10s and 20s has been very dissonant, serious, and committed to atmosphere, whereas this album has a cool atmosphere but embraces a bit of a "rock out and have fun jamming and writing cool melodies" feeling. Reminds me a little bit of Tribulation's "Children of the Night" in that regard.

Aurora Neoterica sounds like the intro to an 80s cop show.

Clean vox in death metal tend to be pretty hit or miss for me, but these work beautifully.

currently on metal-archives and RYM is one of the most comedic reviews of any album i've ever seen.

user "wehopeyoudie" calls ontological mysterium a "focus grouped trope dump" and dismisses their first two albums as death n' roll made by "austere retroists". he also unironically calls mysterium a "phantasmagoria of the familiar made strange," saying 'exeg(en)esis' "restore[s] megadeth's 'five magics' for a generation raised on TikTok dance trends . . . the latest vibecore pushed by paid up influencers desperately thrusting content into the aether in the hope of a page share".

his closing paragraph is potentially the most seroquel-deprived thing i've seen typed all year long. take a whiff!

"thus it feels entirely appropriate to join the ranks of horrendous champions in celebrating this release. having finally abandoned the dream that they will ever be seen as high minded death metal, a genre they never really understood in the first place, they can now fully embrace the funderground metal circus. expect chimeras of malformed spare parts appropriated from the underbelly of a more serious artistic class."

if this guy's 5s on RYM are anything to go by, "a more serious artistic class" consists of bathory's blood fire death, godflesh's streetcleaner, burzum's det song engang var, and... idil biret's piano favorites? huh, wasn't expecting that one.

Well godflesh does fucking rule, Bathory is mid, and burzum is trash. Never heard of the last one

So I think I’ll go ahead and disregard that fart huffing dork and keep jamming the best dm record of 2023

And yeah agreed, the cleans here are used sparingly but never feel out of place, and they’re actually, yknow, good.

I don't care about people having different opinions tbh, but:

"burzum is beyond awesome" [3]

"bathory does indeed rule very hard" [3]

This is AOTY material. The only album I'm ranking above this one as of today is Dodheimsgard's
