This is low-key turning into my favorite Ocean record ngl

Atlantic followed by Subboreal is a nice one-two punch.
Not too big on Uncomformities. Yeah it crescendos about halfway through but the payoff just doesn't hit as strong for me as it seems to have for others. Doesn't help that they made the creative decision to repeat the same lines for the last 3 or 4 minutes of the song. Even a bit of changes with the tempo could have flavored it more and added a bit more dynamics to what is, admittedly, an increasingly plodding resolution.
The increased use of electronics, as a whole, is a very positive evolution of their sound. I actually appreciated the more meditative moments.

"Guess you really actually need to start looking closely at tracklists on vinyl to make sure every song on the album is actually on the album. "
This is fucking sad, man. I was planning on ordering the record, but if Unconformities (my second favorite track here) is nowhere to be found then I won't waste my money on it.

Yeah I'm pretty fucking upset I ordered it without looking and am stuck with keeping it or selling it myself at this point lmao.
At least a little more transparency about the fact that they did that would've been nice.

🤔 I’m just not sure they’re particularly well incorporated thus far, not necessarily from a cohesion perspective (doesn’t flow terribly badly, although the ‘pace’ of the album is off for me), it’s more to do with the production / overall sound. A common issue with synthetic sounds in prog rock / metal tbh.

It suits the overall sound well, especially with the context behind it, but it's definitely some different territory for this band.

CoL nailed it with ADTF for ref, as the synths did justice to the overall ‘meatiness’ of the album. Those elements were very well incorporated. A lot of synths in heavy music just sound limp and airy, like they’re a distraction rather than a harmonious accompaniment.

That's not really the sense I get. They're not really loud and up-front in the mix, but certainly fulfill a role as an accompaniment.
The album as a whole also just really doesn't aim to be heavy, only in choice moments, so that sort of direction isn't really needed.

Lmao the "Unconformities" edition of the vinyl doesn't even include the namesake song.

Oh golly, that's unintentionally hilarious.
Has anyone else complained before about this? Feel like it'd be a big deal.

I’m all about delicate ‘ambience’ in heavy music when it’s done well. I just wish it sounded like the quieter moments here actually mattered.

I guess we have to disagree there, I definitely find they serve a defined purpose and link the more post-metal-esque sections together very well.

I wish they used Karin on most of the tracks tbh, especially for the moodier / calmer moments. Loic’s cleans don’t sound great here.

We just talked repetition in the Sleep Token thread, Demon is simply performing a demonstration.

I just look at the flow of the album as being the ebb and flow of an ocean wave. The use of synths contribute a lot to that, I think.
Tide comes in, music gets loud; tide goes out, music gets soft. You can't explain it.
