a genre pie chart seems like such a dumb idea when most people who take music listening more seriously than the average person already have the capacity to enjoy probably 90%+ of the existing music genres. and those people can prob just tell you what their favorite genres are off the top of their head lol

@dadkungfu I believe that there are people who do that but I promise it's not a universal thing

pie charts are a cool idea it's just dumb how genres are linked to artists and not albums. me 4'ing Bob Dylan's latest blues rock album should not increase my folk slice

oh god there's another area where rym is better. though not by much. the whole voting on genre by album thing is a little clunky lol
|
| |
The pie charts are a statistical disaster, should be completely overhauled (and the genre tags on Sput make it even worse).

I’d argue that MinorTimbo is the only active user alive who does not to some degree do this

Idk Rosa tbh my music journey started narrow and then naturally grew to exploring and finding things to appreciate in most genres to growing much more narrow again but this time around much more discerning. I definitely don’t enjoy 90% of genres anymore.

"I definitely don’t enjoy 90% of genres anymore."
how long have you felt this way? was it like a light switch or does it come and go depending on mental factors? (for instance, I am way more open to different music when I'm stoned or just sober and feeling good) I kinda feel like I might be heading in this direction, almost like I've just heard too much music. But every time I start to find new music kinda dull, I'll get stoned one day and some new charted rym album or song in my spotify discovery playlist will fuck me up

i'd say a humble 75% of the active userbase in 2014 would forgo providing constructive criticism to post their 5s instead and concurrently bitch to other users when they'd do it so i'd say your sputsona doesn't lean as much on your taste as it has in years past

with that being said tho i am more than content with no longer having pop punk or alt rock in my pie chart :]

@rosa kind of both. At first it was gradual and started happening probably about 6 years ago. honestly exploring so much music and rating earnestly kind of just started feeling like more of a chore than an adventure and I realized that I was no longer doing it for the sake of curiosity, but more for the sake of just having heard as much music as possible. So without realizing this the types of music listened to started narrowing, and one day there was a “light switch” moment where I realized that the thing I admired the most about one of my best friends was that even though he was very knowledgeable about some niche kinds of music, he didn’t take it seriously at all, and he kind of taught me how to make fun of music I like. And once I started taking my music taste less seriously it became that much easier to just kind of ignore anything cursory to what I have established I like and to just go with the flow and jam the types of music that I actually take simple pleasure in. And now music is fun again. But that’s just me and where I’m at with my music journey of course, I don’t think that’s bound to be the same process for everyone. I’m a pretty compulsive, anxious, and obsessive person so really turning music listening into this process of cataloging and quantifying everything honestly was kind of bad for my health lol. Letting go of that has been good for me.

tbh i feel you bud, though I haven't lived a similar experience. 90% was prob being a bit generous to myself and most people anyway lol. Spotify and rym have kinda made music fun for me again because so many recs get thrown at me and i spend a lot of time listening to that stuff. But there's def some fatigue. I've added over 1k songs to my library in the last few months and tbh kinda ready for a period of just listening to what I have, and any music that comes out of the artists already in my library. The loop that I'm in with music discovery is a bit nuts, I can't even remember most of what I've enjoyed recently. Our brains prob don't have the capacity to enjoy as much as I feel like I want to

i just went through some years after quitting this site where i got way behind on music so I feel like I've been trying to play catch-up. I got into a serious relationship in 2017 and I pretty much stopped listening to new music and now the last year I've been working jobs where I have pretty much unlimited time to listen to music so i've gone off the deep end a bit
