"I will say I jammed Section 80 for the first time in a while the other day and tbh I think its kinda gotten overrated a bit??? Like it's a 4 for sure but he isn't close to the rapper he is on gkmc and beyond and its really noticeable to me, some really elementary bars on there"
I'm not sure about what number I'd give it, but like. I much prefer listening to s.80 over damn or tpab. He's not as polished but there's a clumsy earnestness to it that I really vibe with. And that's not to say it's thaaat clumsy because he really spits on some tracks.
But honestly he's never been a great "rapper" in terms of pure rapping ability. Like lyrically, songwriting, vision he is obviously very accomplished. But his flow very easily falls off beat and he doesn't have that knack for making it sound like he's just getting a story across and happens to be rapping like a nas or a lupe fiasco etc.

What I love about GKMC is its vividness, much in the same way Illmatic is vivid. Those albums really make you feel like you are in their world.

Woops united in grief is good I meant n95

Whaaaat nah n95 was one of the ones I actually looked at my phone to check the title of. Remember liking it quite a bit. That has the beat change right at the end yeah

N95 is not a favourite for me either. it needed something toward the end and the contrived switch into his crying voice was not it

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks GKMC is overhyped. As of right now i'd put it on par with this album.

I think Kendrick is an exceptional rapper. He has enough flows in Family Ties for like five songs lol I think he is willing to sacrifice flow for storytelling, but he can flex that muscle when he wants to

The return of the crying voice was almost as triggering as him dropping the f bomb 46 times

Nah I liked n95 and how it ended. Just listened to it again to make sure I had the right song. Changes his tone slightly every minute or so and it get a little bit more frantic each time, then it just ends in a bubbly murky beat switch for like 10 seconds. I think if the song were longer it would have been annoying but it didn't outstay its welcome for me. His flow on it is great too. Doesn't do that thing where he tries to cram way too many words into a bar

I do like the little piano flourish but wish that was more of a focal point of the song rather than a footnote

Purple Hearts really growing on me. Don’t care for that Summer chick, unnecessary feature, but damn that song is smooth and pretty

"I think Kendrick is an exceptional rapper"
I mean me too, but I'm talking about pure flow and cadence and the ability to ride a beat etc. Which he does really well but I think his true strengths are his lyrics, songwriting and ability to build a narrative or concept through a series of tracks or an album. Obviously he Is a better rap artist overall than lupe fiasco but yeah

gonna listen to this several more times before i say anything bold. on first few listens, Count Me Out is the only song i'm kinda meh on, even We Cry Together is holding up surprisingly well

@qwe I agree with all that except I def think he's one of the most skilled rappers these days from a flow/technical ability standpoitn.
Only thing about his rapping that kinda bothers me is these eminem type vocal inflections he's started playing with these past couple years. Just hope he doesn't take it too far lol

Listening to we cry together again and thinking about the critiques about it being too long…
I could listen to a solid 7 more minutes of Taylour Paige dick shaming Kendrick tbh
