I'll just drop my two cents and say bar none my criteria has always been about songwriting and songcrafting. Production has never intrigued me enough that it interferes with my scoring, and is almost always a secondary matter to me. Of course I can differentiate between better and worse most of the time, and I appreciate vast landscapes of sound that are able to completely open up worlds before you, but writing and other aspects of the presentation are what appeal to me. For instance, whatever my score is for Flesh Prevails (because of being a notable example) doesn't have anything to do with the loudness war or mix. At some point, if something is so pristine and crisp I'll think "this sounds expensive" and it takes me out of it for a minute. Idk, I like a lot of stuff because it has bad production too because it just adds to the vibe. Just my two cents, don't mean to stray off topic.

Good production is not always synonymous with good sound engineering. It has to mirror the band's sound in that specific time frame. Megadeth's Peace Sells is a good example.

good production can mean lo-fi production that fits the atmosphere the music is going for.
like for a lot of atmospheric black metal this would be the case.

and with production I'm also roping in recording techniques and stuff because thats usually what people also talk about when they casually mention production.

It is obvious that production/sound should be adapted to a specific band/genre and might, or might be not a creative part in which the band is actively involved. What kind of revelation is it, that black metal will purposefully sound differently than technical death metal.
It's not a thing that automatically makes a record good. There are loads of albums that are simply shitcandies (shit music candy wrapped in a glossy sleek paper production).

one of their best post golden age releases honestly, hugely surprising

I do like black metal that doesn't sound like a toilet flushing in a snowstorm.

The people must seize the means of production.

i feel like this band's music is super cold, even compared to other death metal - which often seems to have some sort of 'fun' or tongue in cheek aspect to it, this band like, there's no light or joy to be found at all, just darkness

Just came to say that this band is amazing live. I love their albums but songs can blend a bit between them sometimes. Live they just pick their best songs and they sounds unbelievable.

I always loved Vigna's stage performances. He seems to pull all this shit off so effortlessly while swinging the guitar like a necromancers magic wand... actually I'm not sure whether necromancers use wands.

Not enough people talking about An Act of God. Such a pulverizing and well written song. Great choice for the opener
