there is probably a very healthy middle ground between "reinvent metal every time they release something" and "diminishing returns off their increasingly predictable tropes"

I think when a band is the leading pioneering light in a sea of stagnant mediocrity (?), then it's perhaps fair not to critique said band for sounding too much like themselves.

It's not like we're talking about a tried and tested formula replicated by thousands of bands before them, their sound is their own.

Personally I get something different from all their releases. Is this their best work? Probably not. 'Diminishing returns' is relative after all.

I've never watched 'The Revenant' but I imagine it's the movie version of how this sounds.

how do you even define 'bandwagon' in this instance? Doesn't make sense.

Every single vaguely popular-ish band in this site's entire database could be called the same, it's meaningless

Most music discourse is very silly, that is true.

absolutely yes lol, which why it's no fun on partisan threads
"how do you even define 'bandwagon'"
yh usually there is no reliable litmus test for circuitous e-hype, shock horror, but luckily enough sput has given us the stats that
2017: brand new
2018: daughters
2019: cult of luna
2020: deftones
2021: every time i die
so tbh i rest my case. birds of a feather bby
"I think when a band is the leading pioneering light in a sea of stagnant mediocrity (?), then it's perhaps fair not to critique said band for sounding too much like themselves."
i'm gonna take a quick moment of silence for every mediocre band to sacrifice their art for cult of luna's attain true greatness, and then disregard this forever as the protectivist whataboutism that it is
"if this is a bandwagon band then I’m kicking off every idiot along for the ride thinking so"
had no idea that post-metal's gatekeeping cabal of grumpy old men either existed irl or were prepared to agendapost this openly nice
"I've never watched 'The Revenant' but I imagine it's the movie version of how this sounds"
this is...hmmmmm pretty accurate (esp since the revenant is one of those movies you can visualise 90% of without ever watching it lol). the stakes are defs higher on this though, so you'd maybe be underwhelmed - worth seeing though

so what do those 5 artists have in common apart from the fact the specific albums were popular enough here to attain enough votes to win the yearly user poll

if anything that proves there is no rhyme or reason to it, plus any supposed bandwagoning would only occur after their popularity was solidified by achieving such a thing

are you saying there were barely any Cult of Luna fans pre-Dawn, or the site wasn't sufficiently hyped in the lead-up to the release / merely hopped on after they'd seen how popular the album was? That's certainly not how I remember it

nonsensical argument Johnny boy

Every time I throw this bad boy on I get something new out of it. It's almost like after 30+ listens the similarities between all their other releases because less of an issue. I think the execution and delivery of this record makes me care less and less about how much it sounds like the last two releases

nightbringer gets it
"what do those 5 artists have in common apart from the fact the specific albums were popular enough here to attain enough votes to win the yearly user poll"
lol what else about them would be relevant to a popularity discussion
"plus any supposed bandwagoning would only occur after their popularity was solidified by achieving such a thing"
uhhh not sure how u arrived at this, but fwiw the the avgs for this band's entire discog have gone up rather than down since, that album has almost as many or more ratings as col albums released over a decade prior, and p much all of their threads have devolved into crusty but active regurgitations of the same glowing takes so go fish
"I could write as if I ate 3g of shrooms"
