that's obvs a lot to pack into one sentence, and i went about it as follows:
Music is so powerful because
i rated this album a perfect score on release because it affirmed everything i looked in [a certain kind of] music. the review warrants this bold claim early on if it's gonna be either earnest or, with that score, convincing
it imitates feelings in the Aristotelian sense
the sense of this is the same as in 1) and 2). as it is, the sentence either needs something in the italicised space because otherwise it's ambiguous what attitude it takes to imitation (which Western arts crit typically lumps in with cheap/plastic/unartistic qualities in a similar way to Plato), or needs a different verb with less awkward sets of connotations. Aristotle's theory of catharsis is reasonably well-known and provides an obvious contrast with Plato's view of imitation in art, so it won the day
looking back, i could just have easily have thrown the whole thing out for an it can illuminate parts of our emotional realities that we are otherwise unable to access and overwhelms/astounds/whatevers us with what we find there or similar. iirc the reason i wasn't drawn to this at the time was that i'd been reading up on Aristotle in the recentish part and found it easier to express the thought with that in mind - this review took under 3 hours start-to-finish (an v short time for me) and was very much geared towards what felt intuitively representative of my feelings (as seemed only appropriate for a record i found deeply moving - i'm defs deconstructing the thought process behind it more here than i did at the time, though it ran along the same lines)
brushing their deepest impulses against the shallowness of our sensory reality
the main role of this clause is to stress how imitation/performance can produce such a deep impact despite such a brief period of exposure. it implies - and i guess i intended this at the time? - that the impulses that move us have a deep impact if they're deep in the original
i'd rethink that now; think it's more accurate to view this as deeper parts of the listener being tapped into, and the qualities of music that best equip it to do this as expressible in better terms than deepness/shallowness. i'd also cut either 'shallowness' or 'sensory' - there's enough overlap in nuances there that it gets into ballast territory

so tl;dr, there's the honest expo on (almost) every decision and thought that went into constructing that sentence, along with present reservations about how appropriate they were. it was v tedious to put together and i have done so in the good faith that you actually wanted to engage with it in
and, i mean, did you? find it hard to think of any angle more unflattering than gratuitously dunking on someone else's prose before preceding to throw toys out of the pram and aggressively gatekeeping philosophy. if bringing up that quote was the lazy clutch at an aggravated cheap shot that it very much scans as, show yourself out

getting increasingly sour over content you haven't even read, obnoxiously flexing your knowledge of philosophy without constructively offering any points of clarification, or dragging prose for cheap shots when, in a world where any of this shit was the product of a professional process and not the heaps of free time I have sunk into producing it anyway, would have been reframed after a constructive conversation with an editor (as detailed on the last page) is some wack shit and i expected better of you
