There's a huge difference between disagreeing with someone and calling their opinion "consistently bullshit." Let's not forget that.

Whatever. I dig hyperbole. Don't take it personal.

Of course it is but there's art and then there's art and no matter who you are you know that some of it is unrivalled, undisputed brilliance and other stuff is complete bollocks.

I don't always have the most popular opinions myself, but that doesn't stop me from getting along with other users and stuff. One has to have a thick skin in this site.

Yeah, I mean this IS the internet, Ars. I'm not even one of the more asshole users, man. I got ya back.

"Of course it is but there's art and then there's art and no matter who you are you know that some of it is unrivalled, undisputed brilliance and other stuff is complete bollocks."
No. Each opinion varies from person to person.
It's kind of like how I prefer Van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles and Olive Garden to Starry Night. But everyone is too busy listening to other people obsess over Starry Night to even figure out themselves which Van Gogh Painting is their actual favorite.
In this same way, I have way more favorites from Alice in Chain's s/t and Jar of Flies, than I do from Dirt. I still think Dirt is a solid record, but I have not once considered it to be my favorite and I'm sick of being told that I'm objectively wrong because of it when art is always subjective.
@death: I know... I just need to get this out there^

Fight the good fight, Ars. But know that'll mean getting your ass kicked sometimes.

What school said. I've been on this site for maybe 2 years, and I'm used to disagreements. One has to learn to not give a shit, not just in here, but in life in general. Just look at that last list I made. It took courage for me to come out in front of Sput and admit I had a soft spot for those albums.

@WashboardSuds: where you want to admit it or not, Dirt is subjectively your favorite.

"Art is subjective guys."
Woah. So you're saying that there's a legitimate argument supporting the statement that Justin Bieber or William Hung's music is every bit as "good" as Beethoven's Fifth?

@SitarHero: I REALLY hate to say this, but from an artist's standpoint:
yes.
Now, is this extremely hard to argue? Yes, but if you found an amazing lawyer, I bet he could make a pretty good case for it.
With that said, in my opinion Beethoven slaughters Justin Bieber a billion times over.
|
| |
Sitar, from a taste standpoint, unfortunately yes. From one of effort and complexity, fuck no.

But that's not the art being better (or worse). That's artistic APPRECIATION. Subjective opinion of a piece of art does not validate its artistic value.

Sorry guys, I'm a little high and jamming some Beethoven, so I might wax a little philosophical.
|
| |
That's true. And it never will. At the end of the day, there may not be a true way to validate artistic value, but we try our damnedest.
