Did anyone acknowledge or realize that this is a concept album? It's kind of a story from front to back. The cenotaph obscure being a marker of an ancient presence. The tumulus is where the creatures were buried "animals that never existed". Eldritch Summoning being the beckoning of more creatures, and Detestation Rite being like a cultist call for destruction of the world and humanity. Onto Damnation carries on with the previous track and the Charnel Plains are where life has been eradicated.
I wish they'd publish their lyrics.

I've been going contrarian lately, apparently.
I dunno man, I just think this was pretty stale after a while. Couldn't really remember any cut particularly well, they sounded/progressed/were structured very similarly.

^this. it's a good template but it's still very much a template and just makes everything blend together quite quickly. sure the riffs are pretty cool, but they're really not that different from stuff I've heard many times before. solid effort, but not much more imo.

Yeah, it's like they tried so hard not to make any mistakes here that it ends up feeling like formulaic 'by-the-numbers' DM. There are very few (if any) obvious song-writing faux pas, the production is clear yet still murky enough for most & it has satisfying dynamics in spades. All this sets the template up for a very successful album, unfortunately the songs just aren't there. I like Detestation Rites & the whole thing 'sounds' great & isn't off-putting in any way, but guys, where's the forward-thinking moments that remind us this is DM for 2018? I don't hear any.

I really love the whole first wave bm type production mixed with the dm riffs and the hellish vox thing they got going on here idk.

I'm with Hawks. They do a different concept in each album so far and I also dig this bm outfit with this great vox all over the place. It may sound less varied because of that...but once you get on it its fuckin relentless

When it comes to experiencing absolute hell, I'll be partial to Deathspell Omega.
I agree that it's relentless, but relentless without variation still makes for a bland experience on the whole.

I don't understand these arguments against this album. This isn't far off from Black Death Horizon, which is about as hard a 5 as you'll get. these day There are really awesome riffs, vocals are ever piercing and visceral and the drumming is great with outstanding production.
There really isn't another band out there that does this sound the way Obliteration does it. Hell, even Mikael Akerfeldt has sung praises for them

Hahahahahahahahahaha

Both are beef, yet I'd choose a steak over a burger, any time, any day. This album is the equivalent of a big red juicy steak, done very very well. Like so many death metal bands nowadays, Obliteration are not bothered with originality. Their added value to the subgenre relies on songwriting skills and performance. Hence the high rating average.
