Cool. This was pleasant but pretty vanilla. Lost in the Dream is still their gold standard.

I really really hope there is a real drummer on the next one

I still adore this one almost as much as LitD, and this has a track or two that top anything on that, but they definitely need to change things up a bit more on the next one or else risk stagnation.

Yeah, I truly love this album (although it's not quite on LITD's level for me), but I do hope the new one goes a bit of a different direction

lol it's just the opener of the new album, it is fine. the first single from this was "Thinking of a Place", it doesn't strike me that he really cares about bursting out of the gates
I liked it, that awesome guitar tone at the end was a great teaser

ok I'm admittedly v grumpy because my town just went into lockdown and I lost like a week of work, but shit is pretty underwhelming after four years gone, right? Thinking of a Place was... a weird single choice, but also top 10 War on Drugs straight off the bat (it actually set my expectations way too high for this and none of the other songs lived up lol). the description of the new single in the press release had me thinking it would be some amazing heartland rock banger they recorded live as a band, instead it's a sleepy ballad that barely sounds like it has a band on it

Yeah man, I can see where you're coming from. Just felt a bit weird to be all 'Hypetrain status: abandoned' within 24 hrs of the album being announced and a song dropping, haha. It's the album opener and it sounds like it, that I saw where it placed in the tracklisting made it very easy to contextualize. There was some radio show that previewed a few demos of new songs and I am pretty confident we are in for the same 'big' War on Drugs sound come October

relax and sit..

Although sadly despite how great those demos are they do not indicate the drums (and mostly drum machines) are gonna get any less vanilla

I prob phrased myself too harshly lol. I'll rephrase: still gonna listen to the new album with some interest but perhaps less than complete enthusiasm
been avoiding any demos and stuff, demoitis is real but I'm glad to hear they're soundin good

New song was nice, probably a tone setter as Kiran alluded. I'm excited to see what Granduciel comes up with because he's got a special sound going, but the threat of diminishing returns is very real.
