I had a go with Helplessness Blues because I absolutely love this but I just found it to be twee, trite, shite.

They are a bit twee and a little faux-'rootsy rustic' at times it's true hence 4 ceiling

First two album do contain some great songs though

As a band they're the equivalent of walking into a wankers bar where there's a penny farthing on the wall, board games stacked up and craft ales all over the gaff.

Exactly.

But quality is still quality and there's enough of that to be found in the early stuff.

If you can listen to the Beach Boys you'll be fine, that's the max level of saccharine they achieve

The 'soul' of the beach boys is laid bare. These are a bit artsy fartsy lightweight. I really do like this album though.

I do like a bit of artsy fartsy as you know - agree this is their best and a bit less craft-ale-suppin-core

If this counts, I went from thinking this was an unobjectionable in-one-ear-out-the-other 3 at best to a top 5 AOTY contender

it was a very slow process, but worth it

This one has actually grown off me a tad. May be my least favorite of the three albums.

Thanks dude, means a lot! I've had a lot of practice ;-)

I've handed out a lot of 5's in 2017 but this is still somewhere near the top.

Same here, actually though. Six and counting, and that's even after me 4.5ing things that could damn well be a five. It feels so wrong but honestly it's been an unreasonably good year for music. I don't remember any calendar year being this strong across the genre-board personally speaking. 2016 ruled and 2010 was bonkers for metal but yeah, this year takes the goddamn cake. I'm glad I started coming around here again or I'd be missing out on a lot of gems no doubt.
