This isn't that far off the quality of their first few records imo. If you're rating this a 4.0 or higher you feel that way, unless early Mastodon is like your favorite kind of music.

I really do like Show Yourself, but feel as though it would work better in the middle portion of the album to create more of a stylistic juxtaposition. Its placement second in the track listing doesn't do the song any favors.

Show Yourself would've worked better on OMRTS

menzingers was really good, but still just a 3.5. it will probably go up in rating for me this summer.

the only thing knocking this back for me is the production, which is a little fuzzy and sounds a hella lot like mono rather than stereo. would've preferred the band using the left and right channels in different ways more often, and doing some more overall sonic polishing.

The production is a huge improvement over OMRTS which was awful at certain points

I have nothing to add to the production debate b/c this is my first Mastodon. Probably makes my critical opinion on this record a moot point, but in my opinion the production is good but a little flat across the board. I heard samples from Crack The Skye that sounded a lot more lively and polished. That will have to be next on my Mastodon "to-check" list.

Sowing's on the ball. It's not badly produced, but there's a lot more life to Crack the Skye and Blood Mountain.

you're as blind as the ancient kingdom if you think this is any less than a 4
