I've often noticed the same thing with store-bought hummus, which has a similar mushy consistency that makes it less appealing. Homemade or restaurant-made hummus all the way 👍
In fact, when I was on deployment back in 2018, I visited a Lebanese restaurant in Israel (back when we weren't prohibited from going there due to the current conflict). They brought out flatbread with an extremely creamy olive oil-infused hummus... it was so good that I can still remember the taste to this day 😎

Tbh I've had some store-bought Hummus that was actually good, but it was some brand you can't get at a local supermarket (made for restaurants) so idk. It wasn't as good as fresh made but it wasn't bad at all. Was only the once, but idk.
To be fair, we did add to it and stuff, but still. Fresh made always better, though.

Seriously man, all the best food and drinks I've ever tasted came from that deployment. Incredible grilled lamb chops in Cyprus, amazing gyros while ported in Greece, an entire FEAST during my tour of Jerusalem, drinking sangria in Spain... I'm actually quite glad that I'm returning to sea duty at my next command, because I want to experience some of those things again :]
Or I guess I could just go on leave and fly out to one of those places... that works too

dude one of the very best meals of my life was just roast chicken with nothing but herbs in spain. they have really really flavorful chickens over there. like really really yum chickens. makes me resentful that we generally have to cover all our shit here in the states with spices because our meat is so bland from sitting in industrial farms all diseased and then bleached before packaging. ugh

I forgot to mention in my previous comment, but I also visited Canada (specifically Halifax) and bought maple syrup there. I waited all the way until the end of deployment to taste it, because I didn't want to waste it on the shitty food on the ship. So I tried it with my dad's crepes when I got home, and it was absolutely incredible. In fact, I went to a confectionery place where they made their ice cream on a maple slab. I also bought a "cool as a moose" shirt at a nearby store... can't get much more Canadian than that 🍁
