Oh yeah, Rick Rubin is definitely going to bring back the old Metallica, I can see that happening...
*shakes head*
Old Metallica is gone. They're millionaires now, not angry young men. This album blows, and was the sound of them terrified by their own irrelevancy.
I love 'em, but this just sucked.

One: Rick Rubin Made Reign In Blood, known as the greatest thrash metal of ALL TIME! And Metallica are thrash (or used to be) so thats a bit relevant.

Two: Watch The Some Kind Of Monster DVD and you shall see that they still have what it takes to make a crushing metal album. Sure the production sucks but Bobs gone...

Three: They Must have realised that the concept of the album was bad (aggressive riff-o-rama music) and will hopefully return to the band that we know and loved.

This isn't Metallica's best album but it isn't their worst either.

I think their worst is Garage,Inc. On st anger they tried to make it sound new and they deserve credit for that.

1) Admittedly, Rubin made Reign In Blood, and it's great, but Master Of Puppets gets my nod for best thrash album ever, seeing as how it incorporates the melodic complexity and sheer musical diversity that made thrash such an exciting genre.
However, in the ensuing twenty years Rubin has basically made sweet, tender love to the nu-metal genre, and considering the tendencies in that direction that Metallica showed on St. Anger, do we really want to encourage that?
2) I thought it was obvious on the DVD that they've lost the ability to communicate with each other to the extent where the songwriting process is completely screwed up. That was what Phil Towle was supposed to remedy. All the songs on the finished album sound choppy and rushed and Kirk particularly seems really dissatisfied. Lars is happy, but Lars is a dick.
3) I'm with you there. Fingers crossed metallifans.

The best metal songs are written by one person, and then the other members of the band will influence or change it a bit with their own creativity. What Metallica did with St. Anger was just play some lame guitar riffs, through um together, and called it a song. They explain that they never had the garage band experience of the members writing all the songs together. That's cool and all for them to pursue that but again the best metal songs are written by one person and then changed and revised by the other members.

'Hi, my name is James Hetfield. I went into rehab and completely lost both my balls and the ability to sing in key.
What's next for me? Well, me and the guys are thinking of getting some masks and costumes to freshen up our image, really get down with the kids of today, but at the same time go back to our old sound. I'm not sure when I'll find the time to buy the masks though, because I can only work 12-4 every day, most of which is taken up fighting my evil midget drummer for dominance and ignoring my whinging little girl of a lead guitarist.
Rob who?'

And for the record, I love metallica, but St. Anger? Give me a break.

No, I just love their music enough to be honest and critical about it. This is a 2 star album at best, there are just too many things glaringly wrong with it.

No he's correct, St. Anger was crap compared to their other material. You're just to much of fanboy, so you can't put aside the fact that you love them so much, and actually take a look at their music

It's all good, I respect yours too, I'm not knocking you for liking this album. I just think that this album was definitely the product of a band in denial and confusion, and the music suffered.
And no lad, I'm not timmy.

I am not going to comment on Napster, rehab, Rob, or Hammet being a little girl. I will judge it soley by the music, and compare it to Metallicas' heydey.

1.5/5 seems fair.This Message Edited On 04.22.06

One or the other please.

I'm actually not going to compare it to their old stuff and pretend that it was a debut album by a brand new metal band. Let's call them The Mighty Shitstorm (or something to that effect). Critics rave about these saviours of modern metal, with their original style and unforgiving production attitudes. Rolling Stone says "The freshest album of the summer. They blend raw anger with blinding riffs and brutal vocals. A truly original experience that will kick your arse from start to finish. The debut they will be compared to in years to come."

And you guys jump on board.

For shame. This Message Edited On 04.23.06
