Eh. I guess it just doesn't bother me, but I get where you're coming from.

i mean
me and your mama and redbone are 100% legit great songs tho

You ape an old sound and it's a hit because millennials and general young people don't listen to it enough and it feels "new" and "classic" all at once.
Whoopty-fucking-do.

Good God, yes. I love the raw fuzz attack in the middle of Me and Your Mama and Redbone is probably just a triumph of good songwriting in 2016. Sweet textures all over it. Great choice of vocals.

Also, to someguest, I say that ironically at the same time cause I'm in that boat. I'm 21 and I didn't get really heavily into older music until I was about 18.

I have no problem with the record getting someone into the genre, but making younger people think it's a new sound is blasphemy supreme.

Yeah, I think a similar thing happened with Leon Bridges. Like his album, while really good, is straight up ripping off old soul and gospel. However, it happens to be published in 2015, so the dude is worth millions for like no reason.

everything about leon bridges is carefully crafted artifice though, the fact he's a conscious throwback is an intrinsic part of his look and marketing. this is different insofar as some people seem to think donald is this cosmic visionary inventing a new musical paradigm which is patently bullshit
|
| |
The difference now?
Marketing.

he sounds totally out of his depth on some of these songs...

that's a good way to describe it. like he's been revising his p-funk really hard but has no natural aptitude for it

lmao nothing about the marketing suggested donald thought he was inventing some new musical paradigm, and anyone who read that into it whether they like the album or not is projecting pretty hard
We like this cos it's fun and the songs are good. Stop over complicating things

'lmao nothing about the marketing suggested donald thought he was inventing some new musical paradigm'
i didn't suggest this at all
'and anyone who read that into it whether they like the album or not is projecting pretty hard'
nah. lots of his fans are spouting that kind of shit. There's nothing wrong with liking this, it's enjoyable in parts, but if it's derivative as fuck then i'ma call it derivative as fuck. there's no agenda here

Oh yeah, there are plenty of fans acting like he invented some new genre or something, I agree there. What I'm saying is they're the dumb part of the fanbase. The rest of us just jam out to this cos it's jammable. Not to point fingers or anything, but I feel ppl like someguest who keep harping on this Funkadelic narrative are unnecessarily embellishing everything when they could just say "I don't like this". See its not that hard
