"pretending to enjoy mainstream pop"
ballsdeep no one is pretending to like anything, I don't know about you but I have no shame in admitting what music I like. I saw Taylor Swift during her final 1989 concert, I loved it. Sounds like someone (it's u...) is a bit of a knob

I was just repeating a comment parksunjoon said on the Lorde thread which caused a tremendous shitstorm, but as cynical as it sounds I think there is an element of truth to it. I personally don't get much enjoyment from pop music if only because its so simplistic, souless, designed to appeal to the lowest common denominators (the musially oblivious masses). Not all of it but most of it.

jesus christ

Dont get me wrong there is good popular music out there, but it seems to me alot of it goes by the philosophy of commerce>Art

"designed to appeal to the lowest common denominators (the musially oblivious masses)"
Come on Futures, I never though I would see such a crap comment from you.
I expect nothing less from say, potsy, or Keyblade but dude. I find that people have this weird hangup about Pop and due to it being popular they can't risk being seen supporting something made for "the sheeple masses".
Idk man, like ANY genre there is a ton of trash but when you hear an album that's excellently produced and has great songwriting does the fact that it's Pop really deter you from enjoying it?
I get that Pop may not be your thing tho

The masses are musically oblivious (But masses are oblivious about most everything that didn't come out in the last 10 or so years unless it reaches pop culture institution) and a lot of music is designed to appeal to "the lowest common denominator" but I don't know what that's supposed to prove, it doesn't make the music any better or worse unless you're just hardwired to hate (or love, I guess) that sort of thing, for some weird reason

you could argue since its designed to be easy to enjoy, you would have to actively try to dislike it

It really depends on your definition of pop music though. If you take the term in its literal sense then something like Alice in Chains Jar of Flies which debuted at No 1. on the Billboard 200 charts is the epitome of pop music (at the time), but I know alot of people myself included use the term to describe a particular vapid style of modern electronic/R&B/hip hop.

Again all genres have their gems and their share of shit but pop music seems much more skewed towards the latter than others.
