I think the basis of the hype was the combination of the anticipation to see what Disney could do with the series and just the fact that it is a part of a beloved series (maybe beloved is a bit shaky of a description). It's fine, but it definitely doesn't live up to the hype.

Yes and I think the fact that they were doing all this stuff to stray from the prequels(practical effects, destroying the senate etc no politics) made this movie automatically an amazing one before they even saw it, because "oh my god it's totally dofferent than the prequels"

Just watched that vid Valk, and I 95% agree and a lot of his points were my initial thoughts leaving the movie theater.
I've come to the conclusion that it's a pretty good sci fi movie, but a not very good Star Wars movie.

Pretty much. If it wasn't a Star Wars film I probably would've loved it given it was acted well and it looked fantastic. Here's hoping VIII isn't just Empire II, Lucas' "poetry" be damned.

"Star wars is my uncles favorite movie and he finally got to watch a new one with me like a bonding ritual and throughout the entire movie he didn't smile except for like one line yet he came out saying "it was good" and I came out saying "it was good". Pretty sure we both thought the same thing."

I think VIII and IX can elevate TFA by giving everything more context and shit but TFA as a standalone star wars movie as of now is not very good.
