Acid Hologram is probably the least Deftones sounding track I can even think of, Chino still kind of brings that Deftones vibe but the rest of the band goes complete sludge. There is also a lot more clean guitars here and even a real actual guitar solo on Phantom Bride. I'd say this album separates itself pretty well from say Koi No Yokan and Diamond Eyes musically, but if you think Chino and his style makes all their songs sound the same then this album continues that trend.

This album is hard for me to listen to because of the lack of dynamic range (meaning it's mastered too loud - no separation in the instruments - the drums have no impact, etc.) as can be seen here:

Music generally doesn't start sounding good until at least an 8, though something around 12 would be ideal for this. The average for most new albums is around a 6, unfortunately. You'll notice bad mastering more on music that's naturally loud (hard rock, metal, etc.), and the louder you turn it up the worse it will sound.


Oddly enough they mastered the HDTracks version of KNY differently (much better), but they didn't do the same for this release.

the production is pretty wonky, it turns me away from the album definitely. frank also seems under utilized on this album. def some flaws to the album but some good stuff here too.
