Ah yes, Edge of Sanity is on my list too, forgot they fit the 'movement' for a minute. You guys are all super-helpful, thanks for other suggestions as well.

Yeah, Edge of Sanity kinda grew into it. They started as a full-on death metal band in the Swedish style and then evolved naturally into a more melodic and progressive style of the genre. You could say that them being part of the movement was just a coincidence and they probably would have found the same sound without other melodeath bands around to do similar things. At least that's what it feels like to me: A transition that just happened naturally.

"Am I the only person who doesn't really see a heavy melodic death metal influence in this"

I wouldn't even call it just an influence, it's way more prevalent than that imo. These guys fall slightly more in the melodeath category for me than they do in the bm.

This is a whopping ton of melodeath influence, it's like the foundation of the album.

This might be partly because of the associated history here but man do these vox sound positively terrifying. I love the atmosphere as well & it all sounds very dense & 'full'.

I've just read the comment section of the FAFTS review & my word, the whole thing is basically people arguing over which is better. I'll have to check it out sometime.

Dissection and Vinterland does freeze better

I see a painful lack of love for Dawn. Both their albums are rather underrated and as far as I'm concerned on par with the masterpieces Sacramentum, Dissection and Vinterland released.

Leaning towards a hard 4, really enjoying this so far but feel like there could be even more to come if I let it properly sink in.

Dawn ruled, and they're supposed to be putting out new music eventually.
