nah, my reasons for 5'ing albums vary completely. it could be some next level transcendental shit, something that makes me cry a lot, or just the most solid offering a genre has. i find it difficult to actually group every one of the 40+ albums I have 5'd into one little tag because they all have such distinct personalities and affect me in different ways for different reasons. just because I dont have some super exclusive and personal criteria for them doesnt mean theyre not exclusive and personal for me.

i think ive been more lax with 5s lately tho, considering i already have 2 albums 5'd from this year.

I am actually doing a massive write up that I plan to drop when I hit 1000 ratings on RYM (38 albums away) where I go into depth about why I love each record I have 5d because theyre all just really special in their own special way and id like to share why so.

"it could be some next level transcendental shit, something that makes me cry a lot, or just the most solid offering a genre has."

yeah but that's the thing; if u can put the super special stuff with other stuff that's just "solid", like, idk

"just because I dont have some super exclusive and personal criteria for them doesnt mean theyre not exclusive and personal for me."

yeah but like, forreal idk if u've been that affected by them. homogenic literally changed my life, like

i rarely talk about the albums i have 5d, however, so i dont know how you can conclude if ive been THATaffected by them or not. also i guess i should be a little more clear about the solid thing i mean "best of the genre". Something like Bad Astronaut's two albums I 5d, I think theyre the best of the pop rock genre and have been my favorite for years now. which is why i consider them classics, not to mention Twelve Small Steps has some of the most beautifully sad songs ive heard.

i can't possibly conclude with 100% accuracy how u've been affected by any certain album, of course. idk i just feel like that because so many of them reach that same level, then that level must not be that high idk

on the other hand, sometimes i also feel like all of them affected u in the same way homogenic affected me, and it makes me feel like i'm just broken and can't enjoy music like i should idk

I mean, with almost 1000 ratings (and those are just the albums that didnt fall off the wayside of my memory) only 0.042% of them are considered "best ever" for me statistically speaking. that such a small number compared to the hundreds of albums I spin constantly after liking. I more or less listen to every album I have 3.5 or higher on a regular basis.

I dont consider that "so many" and they all meet very specific bars that the albums I have 4.5'd and the hundreds i have 4'd just dont meet. I dont follow a set of rule for my 5s, but I dont just slap them onto anything just cuz, I have very specific and personal reasons for doing so.

also were all affected by music in different ways, just because we have very different definitions for 5s doesnt mean one of us are broken and the other isnt REALLY affected by them, it just means we are understanding music in different ways.

i don't even know anymore lmao, all i know is that i've been looking for an album that can even come close to affect me like homogenic did for years now ;-;

i'm just gonna step up my game i guess

i feel about the same, my 5s are just records that strike a chord in a way the rest of my ratings dont. Like that new Carseat Headrest record, which was a 5 in an instant for me. One of the few times ive really felt completely connected with a record's songwriting. It was just so hard hitting that I honestly teared up and cried during a few songs because I could relate really hard with how lost and confused the narrative of the lyrics were. I could honestly go on about how every last line on the album is so brilliant and "so me" or something like that.

i don't usually compare my ratings either lol, i don't like it and i think it's kinda disrespectful for any art piece to be compared like that, it's just that homogenic is so obviously much better than anything else ;-;

ok gotta stop fanboying that hard

I loved it a lot. Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales and The Ballad of Costa Concordia are SOTY. also i prolly should say that not all my 5s have had the same affect on me as an album like Teens of Denial has, but they have done something for me to justify their arbitrary rating.

i heard this record one when fripp originally reviewed it and liked it enough to get her other albums, but I dont think ive ever really given it the proper time it deserves.
