Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys, Fugazi, Drive Like Jehu, Jawbox, The Clash, Black Flag, Husker Du, The Ramones, and all the good modern hardcore.
Whatever of those you don't already have.
Including punk-influenced bands, I would add NOFX, Descendents, Bad Religion, Propagandhi, Stiff Little Fingers, D.R.I., Million Dead Cops, The Germs, D.O.A., Dag Nasty, At The Drive-In, Rancid, Lagwagon, A Wilhelm Scream, Circle Jerks, Dag Nasty, T.S.O.L., Reagan Youth, Agent Orange, Social Distortion, Fear, The Subhumans, Operation Ivy, The Damned, Sucidal Tendencies, The Sonics, 7 Seconds, Agnostic Front, The Exploited, The Adolescents, Crass, No Use For A Name, Face To Face, Strung Out (make that your #1 priority!), Screeching Weasels, The Dead Milkmen, Pennywise (first three albums) fuck I could go on but those are ALL essential.

purchased the re-release of this today easy 5/5 defining hardcore punk in the late 90's

There's a difference between being a punk band and having punk influence in the sound dude
| | | strizz i love a lot of those bands but i would hardly call them essential to understanding hardcore
i mean crass is among my favorite bands but you could make an argument that a sizeable portion of their catalog is barely even punk, save for its aesthetics

I don't listen to punk... so this is just blowing my mind. The only punk that I have liked is Bad Brains and this.
Time to research more.
No one said anything about hardcore except eternium. He wanted punk bands, I gave 'em. Crass is punk in message and aesthetic

Album rules sooooo much
| | | ah well if he wants punk, than crass is certainly essential (and i did acknowledge that they are very
much punk in aesthetics/message). i wouldn't call a lot of those other bands essential, though. and
how could you leave out discharge from an essential punk list?

I'm not a scene compendium bro. And what bands exactly wouldn't you call essential?
| | | i dont really listen to modern punk so i'll leave out those bands, but i would consider discharge far more influential than almost every 80s punk band you named that isnt crass or the descendents
i mean MDC, TSOL, and Subhumans (among others) all made amazing albums, but i wouldnt call them cornerstones of the genre like i would discharge
i mean discharge has an entire subgenre of punk dedicated to imitating them
