I've actually read a pretty in depth analysis of the artwork. The scene outside is obviously some kind of post apocalyptic world but the old dude is supposedly some norse guy so it's supposed to be ragnarok. The woman is possibly the little girl grown up having been corrupted by the world as depicted by the tentacles (or imo its just the mother and it's a classic depiction of a broken home combined with a post apocalyptic outside world)
