but yeah
not sure how one can complain about this being obnoxious and pretentious while giving really high marks to the likes of brand new, radiohead, sufjan, and converge but okay whatevs [2]

Who calls this pretentious? What Lakes said.
Also lol at this guy's soundoff. What a load of overgeneralized crap. Pretentious? Oh yeah, 'Adelaide' is so pretentious. The band really tried some avant-garde themes with that number.

the word pretentious is overused [2]
I get so tired of that word. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the people that use it so much even know what it means.

Yeah, not to mention that calling any art you dislike as "pretentious" because it doesn't meet your apparently hard-to-meet standards is pretentious as well

Irony, mayhaps? Or maybe just a healthy dose of a bunch of hypocrites speaking their mind.

For once irony is probably appropriate

Listening to this with my brother's Sennheiser's.
Only on Self-Starter but it's sweet actually being able to hear the bass and bass drum. Man I really need to get myself some good headphones... it's so much better than laptop speakers.

i dont get the hype around this.
to me this sounds like some pop punk band has gone hard rock.
fucking awful....
but what ever, to each their own.

"to me this sounds like some pop punk band has gone hard rock."
lol what? That's sort of what happened, but you wouldn't know that without looking at their discography. Where in 'Self-Starter' or 'Modern Age' is there a trace of their pop-punk roots?
I'm beginning to think no one who dislikes this album can provide criticism that actually makes sense.
Does this mean Anberlin's at that point where people just dislike them to seem edgy? Sweet.

Actually, I want to find people who don't like the album, for the alternate perspective. Maybe they have recs in the genre that they think is better or something.
But "to me this sounds like some pop punk band has gone hard rock" is absolute bullshit if you've listened to the album. So excuse me for calling him out on his shit, but with a vague and basically untrue comment like that I don't even think he's listened to the whole album.

Actually the pop-punk thing, maybe he listened to Someone Anyone. Then the criticism kind of makes sense, especially with the more poppy chorus

I was going to say the exact same thing. That comment is just totally wrong. However, his main genre is hip-hop I think so chalk it up to inexperience.

I never really thought of Anberlin as a pop punk band.

"but sweeping generalizations about people's reasons for disliking something are dumb."
That's not what a sweeping generalization is. I never even made a generalization, considered what I posted (which I assume you're referring to) was a question based on observation of the last few posters to give this a 2.0 or worse.
Ecnalzen really? I thought it was definitely there in Blueprints and somewhat there in NTFP's poppier tracks
