"*fin is like impossible to outdo"

yeah no question, but I'm saying Heaven and Hell does not do a good job trying.

it's super ambitious, and I like the beginning and the way instruments enter and exit, but then the "climax" (which is basically the last 60% of the song) just doesn't do much for me and feels way too dragged out, especially after the guitar solo.

I am so tired of hearing how great people think *fin is and I also don't see how it is relevant to Heaven And Hell.

But sure, why not?

"Beautiful Darkside' does not remind of Anberlin's much-revered LP 'Cities', then the subsequent

epic nature of song-of-the-year contender 'Heaven and Hell' - complete with tempo switches, strings,

guitar solo and choir assisted climax - undoubtedly will"

None of Davey's description remind you of fin?

or the sorta-religious-but-more-about-finding-oneself lyrics set to lonely acoustic guitars before a

sonic explosion into an extended climax?

I'm not sure how you do not see the relevance. Clearly it's regarded as a masterpiece (feel free to

disagree here) and comparing and contrasting makes description a lot easier, whether it's to help

Davey explain why the song is so good or to help me explain what exactly it lacks.

Both bands are in the alternative/rock realm with some Christian/faith based lyrics and have impressive vocalists. Past that, I don't see a big similarity with the actual music itself between the bands. I suppose this makes me sound like I am contradicting myself. I don't see The Classic Crime as an "Anberlin wannabe" group either (not saying that anyone has said/implied this). I actually prefer TCC to Anberlin in most cases (I thoroughly enjoy both bands though).

That was one of the things about the review (no offense, Davey) that kind of irritated me. I don't really think this and Cities sound that much alike. Maybe I am missing something or reading into this the wrong way, I don't know.

They're both more impressive than your average alt rock band and have similar polishing on their

songs. They actually have different styles imo (especially considering Anberlin kinda jumps around

styles) but at the core they have similar sounds.

Personally this reminded me more of DitW (not stylistically but in terms of general atmosphere) but

that's not Davey's point with the comparisons. You gotta understand that Davey is trying to sell this

album to his readers. TCC has 160 ratings on their most-rated albums, Cities has ~1000. And speaking

from personal experience, it was the comparison to Cities that drew me in to listen.

That's a fair point. But we were talking about this and Vital and then all of a sudden *fin wedged it's 8 minute long ass in here and that frustrated me a little bit. I don't see that song as a masterpiece like a lot of people do (I prefer dance dance Christa Paffgen and Miserabile Visu over it) and I get sick of the fact that it tends to get brought up pretty much whenever Anberlin gets mentioned in a thread.

That just be the way it is though.

Well when it comes to Phoenix, expect fin to pop up because H&H builds just like fin. Whether or not fin is such a masterpiece is another conversation though. It's definitely widely agreed to be one by basically everyone though you're obviously free to disagree.

I am just a dude on the internet with an opinion.

Also, we just had a rational argument/disagreement on Sputnik that didn't resort to name calling and/or bashing each others musical tastes. That sounds like a win to me.

Well said toxin.

I do think '*Fin' is Anberlin's best song, but that's ok if you don't Ecnalzen. Either way, I think 'Heaven and Hell' is a good comparison to make to it.

I suppose. I don't listen to *fin very often, so that may be why the comparison is a little lost on me.

Oh, well. Good talk, toxin.
