I feel you have a lot of preconceptions. I mean, for one, I don't think of Say Anything as ever being a very pure example of pop punk. For another, I don't get that much of an indie vibe from any of this at all and am unsure where that's coming from, like "Admit It Again" or even "Sheep". You talk about songs being angry but too light when I don't even know why you assumed the song had to be angry in the first place. But I agree that we just disagree, I'm not trying to convince you to like it, I'm just wondering about some things you say, because I don't hear them, you know?

But I will give you this, the songs, some of them, have very abrupt, large shifts. Maybe my background in kooky, twisty turny prog rock makes me bat less of an eye at these kinds of things. But when pointed out to me.... I have to nod, it's true, "Admit It Again"'s final part isn't the most... conventional turn, I think.

Hmm, then what genre is it? The closest comparison I can come up with is Jack's Mannequin. Generally pop-punk songs by definition express some 'extreme' (if typically immature) emotion - whether it's wanting to party and f*** or say f*** you and assert independence against that bully or know-it-all or ex-girlfriend.

So yes, I was expecting more angst, especially considering some of the lyrics. But this album seemed at peace with itself; I prefer songs that are more frenzied, always exploring and never settling. The lines 'It's my life and I'm living without you', for instance. I want some tension there, some backlash, some restrained desire to do more to this ex-girlfriend or annoying friend or whatever like beat them up. And trying to convince yourself in the song that it's not worth it, maybe - but if you've already decided you're fine, where's the tension?

Actually I'd prefer it to be like that to some extent regardless of the genre. I mean, the first band I go to when I need someone whining for me is Funeral for a Friend, but I also dig some Damien Rice (Elephant!)...

Guess it really is just a matter of taste?

"Hmm, then what genre is it? The closest comparison I can come up with is Jack's Mannequin."

I love Jack's Mannequin but they definitely aren't pop-punk. What CutMan meant by not pure pop-punk is that Say Anything is varied and unique enough that they explore other genres as well and can't be properly pinned down by just saying "oh they're pop-punk".

"But this album seemed at peace with itself; I prefer songs that are more frenzied, always exploring and never settling."

Well then I recommend Is a Real Boy. This as well as their self-titled albums were both written after Max had become happily married and controlled his bipolar disorder, thus some conflict is certainly lacking. It's hard to write good music when you're happy. If you want a frenzied, angry album then look no further than Is a Real Boy.

This album is such a disappointment. This and the self titled really weren't that good but this is an all time low.

mastille, crymsonblaze is right, you really should check out that album.

Although, I must ask, what did you think of the last song on this album? It seemed pretty volatile.
