the point being

if an album sounds like ass, maybe it could use a remaster

it's not charming if the details in the recording are obscured because the person handling the mastering did a piss poor job

Also the horrible production job/value on NWA's Straight Outta Compton is the furthest thing from charming

"it just means that many people today won't hear those songs that same way people did in the 1960s/70s/80s"

there's like three different mixes of Ziggy and all of them have hardly any difference between them

copies of all three mixes are widely available

i fail to see what the point is here

"If it's from an era, it's okay for it to sound outdated"

As in 1970s music isn't supposed to sound modern, so giving it modern production isn't a good idea in my opinion

It's supposed to sound like it's from the 70s

Nile Rodgers is the worst thing that ever happened to Bowie

What most remasters really are are a marketing tool to remind people that the albums exist and that they should buy them

Except for in extreme cases

I guess in extreme cases its okay

that isn't the point with remasters. it's supposed to breathe new life into the album, maybe actually make it sound better. it doesn't make it sound "modern" - that would go against the purpose of remastering the thing

"It's supposed to sound like it's from the 70s"

no it isn't, that's like saying Embryonic is supposed to sound like it's from the 00s when it's in the red for 80 minutes straight

no

I just don't agree unless the remaster is for an extreme case of truly terrible mastering

listen to the last three Flaming Lips albums

all of them have horrible production/mastering

like if TVC used his trademark "lol brickwalling" complaints with those, it'd be true

I wouldn't be interested in checking them if they had the best mastering honestly

Regardless, I said remastering in extreme cases is okay, but no 70s Bowie album is an extreme case

I'm confused, what's with this debate about mastering?

mastering =/= mixing

mastering doesn't exactly change the song. the master tape is already high quality, but when put onto vinyl/cassette/cd they will all have different levels of quality, but the song is still the same.

The article is really not saying much. But I'll admit that my knowledge of mastering is not exactly vast.

What I meant by 'mastering doesn't exactly change the song' is that it's still mixed the same - guitar is still as loud, vocals have the same effects, etc. Mastering just warps the whole thing - it makes the song louder, it plays with frequencies, it compresses the whole thing BUT "at the center of it all" is the original raw mix, which remains unchanged.

At least that's my understanding of things, I don't know...

Such a fun and well-composed album, and it has a lovely atmosphere on top of that. The bass lines on here rule btw.

I hadn't heard any Bowie aside from random films and the radio, then decided to check out his back catalogue a few months after Blackstar came out, and couldn't get enough. He's my most played new artist of 2016 according to Last.fm
