Adam just say you're sorry for being unprofessional. Come on, be the bigger man here.

Without not even 1% of their talent, may I add.

DON'T REVIEW AN ALBUM IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT YOU GUYS

So what you're saying is basically "screw professionalism, I'll just do whatever the fuck I want"?

Well, to the extent of staff reviews, Sputnik's audience (arguably) isn't just the Sputnik community, because ratings often go on Metacritic, Wikipedia, etc. Which is to say, while I suppose a normal user can avoid criticism based on Sputnik's audience, staff writers should keep in mind their reviews are marked as professional. And just as I'm sure people of this community go to this website to check whether to listen to the newest album by whichever band, many non-Sputnikers go to Wikipedia to check reviews. So it actually makes a difference.

It saddens me that New Again got a 5 from here. Maybe even more than this 1.5. But taking in consideration what the reviewer on the New Again review said, it's at least well written, no matter how the score makes me want to punch someone. If this was a bad record, if this was All Time Low's Dirty Work, hell, even Funeral For A Friend's new album - being the first one a band I despise and the second one that I love -, I don't think I'd make a bigger deal. This record clearly deserves recognition. It's an unfair grade for an even more unfair review.

That's what I say when I think reviewers should be more professionals. People may not want to listen to this because of this review. That's a really powerful thing, and should be used with care.

I just wish I could read another review by another staff member here. Positive or negative one, but at least fair. But I don't think this will happen.

I've said my piece. The talk about "there's no need to be professional in the world of music reviews, look at pitchfork" just saddened me. This record deserved better than this. It isn't perfect, but neither TAYF was. If the staff reviewer wants to use his "power" for this, it's fine.

A good record will be a good record, no matter how bad reviews it gets.

Fuck dude you're a barrel of laughs

I'm talking about music on a music thread. Crazy, right? I should just say "THIS SUCKS", "THIS ROCKS" and be done with it.

All good things to those who wait, Japandroid. Take it from another user who just recently became a bit more active on the site; you are simply digging out your own grave a bit more deeply with each subsequent comment. Judging by the shape of the bar charts and rather odd distribution of ratings, there's sure to be another several reviews within a month, and there's bound to be one with which you agree. Oh, and you must have a hearty sense of humor and be able to laugh at yourself; if you take yourself at all seriously here, you'll be eaten alive by these wolves, my friend.

Also, just to reiterate, I think this is a great review, Adam. I just downloaded this album and cannot wait to listen to it. I'm half-expecting to hear the sound of violent trainwreck and I am so stoked.

Whoa. I just checked the chart on the review page again and realized that no one thinks this is superb. Sure, it may be excellent, it may even be a goddamn classic, but one thing is for sure: Sputnik has spoken and this record is not superb.

this kind of goes against the whole "I don't care if the review is negative it just has to be fair" thing you've been repeating over and over. You could've stopped with "I think this review is wrong, the album is good" and we could've avoided this whole mess!

im curious as to what specifically do you find unprofessional about the writing. but i will agree with you that this review could've been more concise.

Mainly it's just the overall tone of your writing. You spend most of the review making personal attacks on the whole band, on the specific members, and on their ideas and motivations instead of analyzing the actual music. Obviously there's room for some personal speculations and assumptions, but spending a whole review hashing and re-hashing it out is a bit much (seriously, an entire paragraph attacking his "Christian metaphor" obsession? Maybe a couple sentences, but no--a whole paragraph?).

Also the first paragraph, with all that comma abuse! Had my head spinning lol. Definitely felt like a rant--like you started shouting insults and couldn't even take the time to breathe properly, so passionate was your rampage. And it all just ran together in a muddled heap.

Lastly, if i know one thing about professional or academic writing, it's that you never want to refer to yourself or to your own opinion in your piece. Now i know this is a casual environment, but it's still extremely tacky when reviews are littered with personal opinion. The "I'll come right out and say it" line, especially in the context of the previous paragraph, kills off any part of me that's trying to take the review seriously.

Obviously i'm no expert reviewer, this was just the most blatant example of a trend i'm seeing lately...the staff reviewers tripping into the same amateurish pitfalls that ordinary, beginning reviewers do.

I hate to say it, but I think I prefer blind sycophancy towards the staffers to this unnecessary whining.

The first two things you mentioned Stan are personal preference, but I want to address this part. I have to ask: why? I believe first person certainly has a place in any opinion piece, as a review, especially on sputnik, is one person's opinion, hardly an authoritative piece decreeing objective fact. What appeals to me about using first person is that it allows me to express what I believe in a more coherent manner while allowing the room for other opinions.

If your review was a 1.5 and well written, I'd give a pass. But it isn't. And I don't care if you don't respect ScorpionStan opinion over here, he said better than I could ever did.

I don't feel like mocking people, albums or anything at all instead of discussing ideas. This place is more like "FUCK YEAH, REVIEWER IS RIGHT, BRILLIANT WRITTEN, GOOD JOB". That's really not my thing.

This is a music review website. Not a vehicle for people getting their egoes boosted. If that was a well written review, I'd be discussing my views on the record, not the review itself. There's little to no information on the review about the album, except you really hate the record and you think the band members should grow up.
