This is anything but standard indie. The blend of influences here is so eclectic.

On third listen this is setting in some serious hooks, might be a 4.5. I've been wanting some atmospheric, textured indie rock recently and this really hits the spot.
@Lucid, I mean this might be entry-level in the sense that it's very well-known and highly regarded but there's definitely a lot more going on here than in the majority of indie rock that I've heard.

I have no doubt this would be a 5 if I had listened to it 5 or 6 years ago when I was just getting to Arcade Fire, The National and so on.

"entry-level" is the most reductive and meaningless critique lol

Yeah I've always hated the term entry-level because it runs on the assumption that obscure stuff is better than better known/acclaimed stuff and that you're somehow more "legitimate" a fan of a certain genre if you know lots of random/uncelebrated artists and eschew the popular ones.

it's not really about obscure albums being better than the popular ones, it's just that popular albums generally have a tendency to attract more people into the genre, hence they're often called "entry level" albums. simple as that

p.s. i wouldn't call this album entry level either, it's not necessarily easy to get into this

That may be the origin of the term Art but the term is always used in a derogatory or dismissive way which implies all the things I said above.

it could go either way tbh. all about context.

yeah i mean it's bound to happen since those particular albums are rarely seen very intricate (which, if you get into it, can be much more rewarding than simple songwriting). being "entry level" doesn't always need to be a derogatory term though, those albums always have their place in the genre 'spectrum'

I mean yeah it could in theory not be used in a negative way but I've never seen it used as such.
Plus when you're talking about indie rock a lot of the albums/artists that people call entry level are actually fairly intricate or complex/acquired tastes.

well, we are talking about indie rock which is probably the most hipster genre out there, and you know hipsters
entry level is often seen as a bad tag but i've seen it used like "hey you wanna get into *insert genre*? jam *insert a bunch of entry level albums*, they are pretty accessible"

check the "emo lite" list Boney. I would call all those albums entry level but that's far from a negative thing since they all are amazing

Album Rating: 4.5
Idk I feel like accessible is a better term than entry level in those cases
|
| |
yeah entry-level wasn't a criticism just an observation. i group this with funeral, in the aeroplane, illinois, yankee hotel foxtrot and other albums that people cluster in their all-time favs list until they decide to have a personality

yeah but it's all about ~entering~ into a new genre
