Or you just don't realize how influential it has been. It's like the Reign in Blood for indie rock.

indie rock? post rock? shoegaze?

i think you forgot to add that this was a pioneering free jazz album too!

Except it did have a pretty big influence on all of those genres, maybe a bit less with post-rock.

ill mince no words: this IS the most influential shoegaze album. there was arguably shoegaze before it--cocteau twins/jesus and mary chain, perhaps?--but this is definitely the most influential.

post-rock? nah. slint? talk talk? that's influential post-rock, right there, both either at the time or before this. this isn't post-rock, and it certainly didn't influence as much as spiderland or laughing stock did. this is certainly influential, but you must be sure not to overextend its influence into fields in which it does not belong.

Ok, let's say it didn't influence post-rock at all. But it's impact on indie and alternative music was enormous.

Post-rock and shoegaze are usually lumped together with indie. It isn't Spiderland or Laughing Stock, but it's certainly one of the most important albums for music based on textures and sound rather than hooks and riffs.

also maybe i was harsh on the 'indie rock' but for some reason whenever i think of indie rock i get images of modest mouse pavement et al. 'indie rock' is such a dumb broad term anyway lol

I see it as an album that influenced a bunch of indie kids to buy distortion and delay pedals and then attempt to make something melodic.
