okay guitar maturity at least how i see it would be more technical skill. which does render your statement that the guitar work is more mature on vheissu dumb, because it's pretty obvious the guitar work here requires more technical skill.
sorry if i'm coming off abrasive, i have no hard feelings toward you mongi and i like talking about this album.
while i do admit it's my favorite, i don't think that constitutes having a bias. i've dissected the fuck out of this thing looking for flaws, trying to be as unbiased as possible

Just having a debate is all lol
Pretty much everyone knows how I feel about Dream Theater on this site. Technicality doesn't automatically equal more enjoyment or make it better. I favor the balance of atmosphere and technicality. Opeth, Tool, that type of stuff. The thing I said about DT could be applied to this album too. Granted I'd take this album over most DT though I do like it quite a bit.

I've always thought that Thrice matured a lot, musically speaking, post-The Artist in the Ambulance.
Funny that you mention Radiohead @Mongi123, I've read quite a few interviews in the past where they've praised Radiohead, calling Kid-A a life-changing album and so on. Anyone listening to their later releases can see how much of an influence that album was on Thrice.

So, I just listened to The Illusion of Safety all the way through again. The lyrics seem immature :^)
Problem solved.

believe me i am the LAST person to think technicality equals quality. i'm just not sure how you're deciding the guitar work is more mature on vheissu
and feather, what about the lyrics is immature? they're really honest, and beautifully written

Only way i could see this as being immature at all is in the vocals with their teenagey feel but thats not even a criticism just a part of the music

I've always considered maturity in a band to be a willingness to go against the grain within their genre, or even treading out into uncharted territory. Furthermore, succeeding in such an endeavour shows that the group were able to convey their musical intention in a coherent and ultimately enjoyable manner, which further demonstrates said maturity.
With regards to Thrice's maturity, you're dealing with albums here specifically that were released close to four years apart, and when then genre of alternative punk was in a pretty great state of change. It's difficult to say that "The Illusion of Safety" is less mature because it was simply released at an earlier time. It's really not fair to say because both albums set the bar for the genre and created an identity for the band, sonically. Thus, I do believe both albums should be considered mature in their own light.
Of course, listening to The Illusion of Safety now in 2015, it's not going to sound all that "mature" because of the material that has come out since. But in 2002, that shit was at the forefront of the genre.
