Lossless is definitely the best option to archive your music. I keep all my albums in flac format in a portable hdd,
and create v3 mp3s from the flac files using LAME + foobar; I have to use mp3s because my laptop's hdd is only 160GB.
Yes, foobar is great.

Like qw3 said, it depends on the sound system you are using, but in general, yes, the difference between 320kbps mp3
and flac is minimal. However, one cool thing about flac is that you will always get better quality when transforming to
any lossy format, whereas the outcome of mp3-to-mp3 trans-coding is awful.

i use standard windows media player cause i'm lame. nah it's more like it's because i'm so used to it and it does everything i want it to do. plus the srs wow effects do sound pretty fucking awesome in my sennheisers.

It really doesn't. There have been so many blind tests between lossless and 320kb/s and they always come out the same; you can't tell the difference. Why would you ever need to transcode from mp3 to mp3?
If you care that much about sound quality buy the vinyl.

Why would you ever need to transcode from mp3 to mp3?
To save space in my hdd/iPod. I care about quality, but buying vinyls is impossible because the shipment to my country is too expensive.
