Tate seemed to try a little hard at the higher end of the spectrum where I think it sounded more natural for Labrie and Alder

No debate he was the best vocalist of the 3 though

It's tough for me to choose between them, but I don't think I'd have Tate on top.

Well Labrie was pretty awesome early on. I don't think either Fates singer compares.

@Anthracks: Judging a progressive album after one or two listens. Makes sense

i've been listening to music long enough to know exactly what will appeal to me after brief exposure, especially regarding metal. yes it does make sense.

@Anthracks well at least you tried. I've given up caring about whether people like something, but it irritates me when people refuse to check different stuff out.

@Omair When would you say his peak was? I've only heard No Exit through A Pleasant Shade.

@Friday: That's pretty much his peak haha. I really like his timbre, it's pretty distinct. It's tough to choose between them for me, one day I'll prefer Labrie, and on the other day it's all Alder. But I haven't listened to DT properly in quite a while now

I was referring to Ray Alder's vocal peak. Disconnected is a great album for sure

Alder definitely improved during that period. It was honestly very hard for me to get through No Exit just because of the singing. I don't know if it's just the way the melodies are written in Fates Warning that is a little off-putting. To be really technical about it I think they use too many large and unusual intervals in an attempt to be more unique or something. I dunno, I like my instruments to be creative or avant-garde, but I prefer the singing to stay hummable. I'll have to check Disconnected next.

Disconnected is very humable. But anyways...

I feel that No Exit has Ray being very... untamed in his vox imo. He shows a bit more discipline on Perfect Symmetry, and even moreso on Parallels. I feel like his voice stayed the same up on that and up through APSoG, but on Disconnected and up until now his voice got a bit lower so he sounds a lot more mature.

Yeah I get what you mean Friday. Early FW had a much larger focus on high pitched vocals and odd melodies and arrangements. Like Parallels said, from Perfect Symmetry Ray started to get a bit more of an identity. Earlier prog metal had high pitched vocals so that was always to be expected. Nowadays he stays in the lower register but has a huge focus on memorable melodies. After Disconnected check their latest album. Nothing ground breaking, but solid heavy prog metal.

Perfect Symmetry is still my favorite Fates. It's to Fates Warning what "I Feel Love" is to Giorgio Moroder. Jackpot. That's the sound, baby!

Maybe that's because he's a baritone and the two other are tenors. Has an obvious extensive lower register too compared to LaBrie and Alder.

oh yes he does and you can really hear it on songs like The Thin Line and the intro to Silent Lucidity

Tate's lows were just as good or better than his higher range. He was just an incredible vocalist with a tremendous amount of power in his voice.
