It's pretty far removed from just being straight up black metal though. it's really ambient. I, like you, don't really like Black metal itself much either, but this is a cool record/band

Well it definitely has black metal elements obviously. The screams, the tremolo picking, and the atmosphere are all very black metal-esque.

i disagree about the atmosphere. it has a very melancholic atmosphere, and yes some black metal uses melancholy, but it's a different melancholy - a more romantic one that i don't think i've heard in black metal.
