"To play devil's advocate... what if they still put part of proceeds towards these organizations and then didn't rename/re-art the work? Would the net good be lower or the same?"
it'd be a bit lower

aw cmon what element of lettin the boys see some moolah is objectionable
|
| |
seems like the best way to handle it no? supporting organisations that help those communities and giving them a shout to others, what would you have them do otherwise?
it's not like this is an exceedingly racist album spreading bad ideas, they had an insensitive title, most likely fuelled more by the kind of artsy 'exotica' connotations that a lot of psych bands have used in the past and still do, it hasn't aged well but don't see it warrants anymore than a casual eyeroll

"In an interview with Brightest Young Things, he implied that he has synesthesia and associates sound with visuals.[14] He later clarified that although he has talked about it a lot in interviews he does not consider himself to have it."
-From Avey Tare's wikipedia page
Why lie about having synesthesia Avey
But yeah I agree that donating to groups is prob the best way genuine or not since it actually benefits those groups

I agree with sinternet that there's an extent to which throwing Real Money Dollars is Not Disingenuous by nature its why the show shark tank is good
|

Shark Tank rules, though Mr. Wonderful is annoying and Lori seems secretly evil
It's all about Barbara and Mark anyway

those probably are the two best sharks aren't they yah
mark is awful but he's gotta be my favorite all told

"In the case of The Simpsons episode, why not do what Looney Tunes did?
For all of their racist/controversial cartoons, they now put a disclaimer before it:"
ok, but what exactly is this doing to mitigate the damage this causes? being presented absent of any kind of educational context like this seems, to me at least, as much an empty gesture as you're claiming Animal Collective are making, just of a different variety
what does putting a "this is racist, but we aren't racist anymore" disclaimer before a racist cartoon (or, a padeophile's public image campaign) truly do to change how these texts are internalised through exposure and consumption, other than literally make salient that "some of this is racist" or "this guy probably sexually assaulted kids btw"? I imagine this doesn't do an awful lot for audience members who either: already know or are directly affected by them; I can't imagine it does much for the uninformed, who need to know why these depictions are problematic

that post very much begs the question of what you suggest tbh. what do u suggest
|

Lemme try:
Disclaimers that are tailored to each piece of media that are thoughtful and maybe written by someone from the affected group, instead of a generalized one
How would that fare Jas?

"being presented absent of any kind of educational context"
i would like to see more effort being made towards education about these topics and how they apply to the media in context, ie, how these stereotypes work mechanically within systems of oppression. because one of the main reasons so many people just brush this shit off is because it is an area about which they know frighteningly little and have not yet gained perspective of

Prestor John is one of the best thing they've done since Merriweather and I'm all about the Deakin harmonies, I'm hype

I think the hype for this band died quickly after MPP because outside of the Fall Be Kind EP, they've really kind of squandered their momentum (IMO). I still check all their works out of curiosity, but their releases have become less of a big event to me and more of a "oh god,, please don't suck" feeling.

Sowing: yeah it's the same for me. Fall be kind was the last truly great thing they did. Always approach their albums hoping to get something out of them but they don't have the melodies or creativity of their earlier stuff

Prester John is excellent
3 tracks into the new one and that was the first thing that really caught my attention

Also enjoyed Strung With Everything. Got a few tracks past that but then had to tend to screaming babies and toddlers and sort of lost track lol. Seems like it might be better than their last few but I need a distractionless chance to listen.
