I think the last album to go platinum (1,000,000 sales in the US) was Death Magnetic......and before that I couldn't even tell you. Bieber and Jay Z would go platinum in a week or two.

Back in the '80s a major rock album needed to sell more than 2/3,000,000 in the US alone. Nowadays 500.000 (Gold) must be a huge success.
