Vocals are "Death-like", there is few growls, but who cares ? Obscura's vocals are less monotonous than Fleshgod Apocalypse's vocals.
And yes, it's not very original, but for me, that's an excellent tech death synthesis. Every single influence is correctly intragated to the music, each song is different and the structures are fluid, but still catchy (not like the last Decrepit Birth album). AND, that's very important, their tech death is personnal : you can feel different influences (Death, Necrophagist, a little Cynic etc), but there something else, something personnal (I can't put the finger on it... Bur some people says that it's a Necrophagist copycat, I don't think so : Necrophagist adds a lot of "neoclassical boring shit" in their music, not Obscura).
So, like Bloodbath wich plays not-original-but-good-old-school-brutal death metal, Obscura plays not-original-but-good-tech death metal.
Oh ! And seriously... HEAR THE PRODUCTION ! It's very clear, but still powerfull and obsolutely not synthetic. Hear the drums ! It's million miles away from synthetic and boring new tech death drums (Fleshgod Apocalypse, Brain Drill, Hour of Penance, Deeds of Flesh etc).

Agreed. I could listen to repetitive retro Stockholm death all day every day of the week and not get tired of it. Also, I dig the vocals.

I dunno if i would say they are copycats of Necrophagist, Christian Muenzner was in Necrophagist for like 4 years, so it probably rubbed off a little on him. But there is a lot more feel to this album.

I'm going to give this another listen right now. It's been way too long since I've listened to this considering it's one of the best tech death albums I've heard. Haven't heard much tech death though. I also want to get some more old school death metal, but my ipod is being gay and won't let me add any new music onto it.

Tech death is a very recent genre in comparison of some other death metal genre (good ol' swedish with chainsaw riffs for exemple ^^). The only "old school" tech death metal band that I know is Death and maybe Nocturnus or Pestilence.

I don't understand the negative reviews. The vocals aren't that great, but the musicianship is fantastic.
Maybe it's because I'm a fan of fretboard wank.

This band/album is tight. The bass is high in the mix, which is good, considering it's a fretless 6-string. This album takes some influences from other tech death bands, but that can be expected. With this album, Obscura represents an evolution from standard tech death. They have insane shredding, brutal riffs, and even clean parts. Truely a great listen to anyone who appreciates solid tech death.

if you're into crazy tech death metal then this is for you. remember that other than the crazy audible fretless basslines there really isnt anything new here.

Wouldve given this just a 4.5 but I love everything about this album....Had it the day it came out.
Big Necrophagist fan but Muhammad's solos tend to become repetitive after a while (Very obvious its him with his whole "Middle Eastern Dwiddly Doo" sweep-tapping.
Obscura is FAR better and much more diverse IMO. Easily the best Metal album of 09 SO FAR......Just havent heard anything that is that immediately innovative and impressive be released yet this year.
Christian Muenzner = Pupil having surpassed the Tutor (Muhammad Suicmez)

I wouldn't quite give this a 5, but this is some of the best tech death I've ever heard.

now now hawks that's saying a bit too much. album seemed really good at first but after venturing
further into the realms of tech death this doesn't really seem like much
