I just played the one song on Rock Band 2 last night and it was actually interestingly fun (guitar-wise at least). But the rest of the album not so much.

This album is laughable.

The dangerous skag n' whisky Guns n' Roses...Elton John'ified - and we're not talking Elton John in his pomp.

Guns n' Roses was only really about the swagger, this is anti-swagger. This is Axl 'protein shakes and face lifts'-core. Overproduced to within an inch of its life and yet still saggy as fuck.

Never got the swagger from them at all, it all like seemed parody to me.

The Kill Your Idols and Charlie Don’t Surf T-Shirts were cool though.

Listened to 'Appetite' yesterday, it has the swagger for me.

They went the full 'wow man, we ARE Led Zeppelin!' on Use Your Illusion trying to win a Nobel Peace Prize with 'Civil War' and other enjoyable nonsense like the OTT interpretations of canonical rock n' roll covers. They'd definitely become parody by then.

'Chinese Demo' is post-parody.

Use Your Illusion a Led Zeppelin parody?

That's a new one.

I really can't understand the cynicism for this band.

Yeah, they decayed after Use Your Illusion, but everything anterior from their end was monumental.

I just meant they believed their own hype and got very ‘serious’ and aware of their ‘rock n’ roll hall of fame’ type legacy overnight - I was mostly taking the piss out of Civil War, Live and Let Die and Knocking though.

I’d have preferred Illusion to have been a single set and to have the rockers outnumber the ballads a lot more, and no covers. It would have been better as a lean fighting machine like Appetite, no one will ever change my mind on that. I do like Use Your Illusion though don’t get me wrong, it’s close to a guilty pleasure as it’s so overblown and indulgent.

At the time as a 12 year old and massive fan I was half obsessed and half repulsed by that album lol

i remembered checking this out of pure curiosity as someone who's always disliked GnR and this was just so mind numbingly boring. not even obnoxious enough to be memorable. just boring.

I like how over the top Civil War, Live and Knocking are though despite them being way too self-serious. I agree with your take generally though. 'self-indulgent', 'overblown', 'half-obsessed, half-repulsed' are all incredible takes.

Appetite is a 4.5 (a 5 at the time, or even now if in the right mood)

Use Your Illusion is a 3.5 (with the potential a 4-4.5 single album hidden in there somewhere)

Just looked at the tracklist for this and I dont remember anything past the opening trio and I believe that is mostly attributed to them being included in Rock Band 2...

I don't have a single GnR full release above 1.5, if November Rain as a single counts then that's the exception. so there was no way i'd have this more than a 1

The guitars on this are masterful they are such a massive improvement, they really lift this album up and bring the songwriting to life in a fantastic way that makes it addicting. I fucking love this album and I always hated this band

This album is what happens when the studio becomes the biggest factor ahead of the writing or the musicians.

I’d like to get an AI to give this an Appetite production wash and an original Appetite line up filter.

It still wouldn’t be great but it might at least sound (ironically) like the work of living breathing humans.

There are some good lyrics on here. Better is an obvious standout. I won this CD in a radio contest when it came out and I was going through a bad breakup. This hit pretty hard even though the music and vocals were all over the place.
