I always though of Illusion as more of a punk and post hardcore mix with some metalish stuff (like zing said) mash up with some pretty frenetic song structures (like Emery and Chiodos for example), where this is more straight up post hardcore with some alternative/rock mixed in and a lot more evenly structured songs.
Identity Crisis is good for what it is: Thrice's first album. It has a couple of good songs. I still give the title track, A Torch To End All Torches and T&C a listen every so often. It's worth a listen just to see the huge change from it to Illusion.
I think this and Vheissu go back and forth on what's heavier. Vheissu has some pretty heavy parts in some songs, but Artist is more consistently heavy throughout the album.

"You should just start at the beginning and see the evolution of Thrice. It's a bitchin journey till the end."
Indeed it is.

Of all the early Thrice albums, I find this to be the most consistent and therefore best of them. Vheissu has some dull moments, but overall is still great. Never liked IoS. Beggars is my fav of the full discog.

All their stuff is on the awesome side. I wish all my favorite bands would stop breaking up...

His voice feels a bit too "nasal" on this, at times. I prefer Vheissu

His singing definitely gets better from Artist on. His cleans are pretty much my only complaint on this album, albeit a very small complaint. His tone has improved so much over the years.
If you don't like the way he sounds here, you probably would not like their first two albums as much either.
